Metta World Peace Believes Lakers Will Reach Finals This Season

Denver Nuggets v Los Angeles Lakers - Game SevenMetta World Peace has always been one to speak his mind, even when the viewers have no idea what he is talking about (i.e. his “too sexy for his cat” interview). That is just one of the things that Lakers fans will miss from World Peace, after being amnestied by the team earlier this offseason.

However, there wasn’t any presence of hard feelings or animosity between the Lakers and World Peace, and that is evidenced by his latest claim of his former team. While partaking in a signing for his children’s book Metta’s Bedtime Stories in New York City on Wednesday, Metta stated (according to Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York):

“I think the Lakers are going to go to the NBA Finals.”

“I think Kobe [Bryant’s] gonna be healthy, they’re gonna get Pau [Gasol]. The Lakers are gonna make a big trade like they always do. They’re gonna get another good player, boom, boom, and they’re gonna go to the Finals. I believe it. Kobe’s gonna come back, he’s gonna play team ball, and Pau’s gonna play well.”

That is a pretty bold statement from World Peace, considering expectations for this Lakers team are much lower than previous years and making the playoffs are even in question. On top of that, World Peace’s prediction contradicts ESPN’s recent ranking of the Lakers finishing the 2013-14 season as the 12th best team in the West.

The Lakers do have a history of pulling of a blockbuster trade at the trade deadline, which results in success (i.e. Pau Gasol in 2008). However, as it stands now, it appears that the Lakers’ front office is targeting the 2014 offseason to make noise as they will have the cap space necessary to do so.

Metta World Peace signed with his hometown New York Knicks after he was amnestied by the Lakers this summer. The Lakers and Knicks face each other on January 26 in New York and March 25 in Los Angeles.
