NBA News: Phil Jackson Compares 1999-00 And 2008-09 Lakers Teams

Kobe Bryant and Phil JacksonWhile much of the attention from Phil Jackson’s book, Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success, centers on the comparison between Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, Jackson also compares several of his championship teams in the book.

Between Jackson’s 72-win Bulls team and the three-peat Lakers teams of the early 2000’s, Jackson has seen his fair share of amazing teams.

In his book, Jackson talks about how the 1999-00 Lakers team was the most talented team he coached, but the most transcendent team was the 1995-96 Bulls.

The 2008-09 Lakers were one of Jackon’s last teams to win a championship and was led by Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. The bench consisted of Lamar Odom, Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic, and Jackson talked about how it was difficult at first for all their egos to mesh together.

Odom was a starter for most of his NBA career, but he bought into Jackson’s system and relished the sixth-man role as he won two championships with the Lakers.

Like most of his book, Jackson’s assessment of the teams will be criticized by Lakers fans and NBA fans alike.
