NBA: Playoffs-Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder

The new era of the NBA is rich in point guard talent. Every championship contender has a top flight point guard and it is arguably the deepest position in the entire league.

This summer could see a number of excellent young guards hit the market and the Lakers are very likely to pursue someone at the position. One very intriguing option is Oklahoma City’s Reggie Jackson who, according to Darnell Mayberry of The Oklahoman, is unlikely to sign an extension:

But as the deadline nears, a deal appears unlikely to get done and talks will have to resume next summer when Jackson becomes a restricted free agent.

With the deadline to sign an extension this Friday, Jackson could still remain with the Thunder and being a restricted free agent makes it easier for the Thunder to retain him. They have said they would match any offer for Jackson next summer, but the price to keep him may be higher than originally expected.

Kemba Walker just signed a contract extension worth $12 million per year with the Hornets and Eric Bledsoe remained in Phoenix for around $14 million per year. Based on talent, most would place Jackson in or close to that group, even if his numbers aren’t on their level.

Jackson impressed many last season, especially in the playoffs where his 32-point performance in a must-win game against the Memphis Grizzlies saved the Thunder’s season. In addition, his numbers per-36 minutes are very solid as well.

He has spoken many times of his desire to be a starting point guard in this league, something he won’t do in Oklahoma City as long as Russell Westbrook is there. The Lakers have no point guards under contract for next season, and Jackson could definitely be a a great player given the opportunity.
