After a rough showing in their California Classic opener, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Summer League team looked to get on track on Sunday afternoon when they took on the Miami Heat at Chase Center.
It was a much better showing from the Lakers as they fought back from an early double-digit deficit to force overtime. Ultimately, the came out on top with a 93-91 win in double overtime.
L.A. will now have one more California Classic game on Monday before heading to Las Vegas.
Lakers first-round draft pick Cameron Carr was the lone bright spot in the Summer League opener, and he picked up where he left off with a midrange jumper to begin this game. He also hit an early 3-pointer, as did two-way guard Peter Suder, although the Lakers again found themselves in an early double-digit deficit due to Miami’s hot shooting.
The Lakers trailed 26-17 at the end of the first quarter, but Carr went to work with seven quick points to begin the second quarter to keep his team within striking distance.
Chris Mañon made some nice plays on both sides of the ball for the Lakers, and Suder hit another jumper. Overall, though, the Lakers struggled in the first half and went into the locker room trailing 49-39. Carr led L.A. with 12 points in the first half while Suder had seven.
The Lakers came out strong in the second half as Anton Watson had a thunderous poster dunk and then Carr had a dunk of his own. They cut their deficit to just three, although the Heat then responded with a run of their own to get their lead back to double digits.
With the Lakers trailing 74-64 going into the fourth quarter, they had to make some sort of run in order to make it game. They did exactly that to get within just three after a nice drive and finish by Chris Mañon.
Carr continued his strong performance with a pair of triples, and then Watson and Mañon each came up with a steal and layup to tie the game at 87 in the final minute.
After another steal by L.A., they could not beat the buzzer as the game went to overtime.
The overtime period is only two minutes, and the Lakers had the ball with the game tied going into the final possession. Thiero drove and dropped it off to Watson for the game-winning layup, but he missed the attempt.
Double-overtime became sudden death, and the Lakers won the tip. Carr took a midrange shot for the win that went in and out, but Watson was there to redeem himself with the putback for the win.
Carr led all scorers in this one with 26 points on 7-of-16 shooting and 4-of-9 from deep to go along with eight rebounds and one assist.
