The Los Angeles Lakers trip to Slovenia was all about team bonding, getting to know each other and beginning to build that chemistry amongst a roster full of new faces. The Luka Doncic-hosted trip also coincided with one of the biggest days of the year for the Lakers and their fans everywhere, Aug. 24, aka Kobe Day.
The day, of course, is the combination of Kobe Bryant’s two numbers, 8 and 24, and babies born on this day are often referred to as “Kobe Babies.” As such, with the team being together in Slovenia, Doncic and the Lakers decided to celebrate Kobe Day at the largest hospital in the country, giving out some gifts to the families celebrating new life, via the Lakers YouTube:
Not only were the Lakers at the largest hospital in Slovenia, but it was also the hospital where Doncic was born. A nurse would present Doncic with his baby chart from that day, and the Lakers superstar was even able to meet the doctor who delivered him for the first time.
Things like this don’t always seem like a big deal to some, but these moments can mean so much to fans and how much Doncic is loved in his home country was evident throughout this video. It was also beautiful to see the rest of the Lakers really embracing everything and making memories with everyone. Players were learning Slovenian words, Austin Reaves swore that he would be visiting the country again, and Doncic even signed a baby at one point.
Any time Bryant can be celebrated and remembered is beautiful as the Lakers’ icon was truly a one-of-a-kind person. And for as much as Bryant put into being the best on the court, he put just as much effort into being a great father to his daughters and took great pride in being a “Girl Dad.” So Doncic and the Lakers spending Kobe Day at the hospital and welcoming more new life was very fitting in honor of a legend.
Lakers unveil Luka Doncic bobblehead for Nov. 1 giveaway
Last season saw Doncic lead the NBA in scoring and the Lakers will be celebrating that with a giveaway on Nov. 1 when they host the Toronto Raptors. The Lakers will be giving away a Doncic bobblehead on that night and the team recently unveiled how it looks with the superstar in a familiar pose of shooting a floater that he’s knocked down hundreds of times.
