The entire basketball world is greatly anticipating the 2026 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks are in the Finals for the first time since 1999 and have the entire city behind them after this unbelievable run and back-to-back sweeps while the young Spurs took down the defending champs are at this stage earlier than anyone anticipated.
Someone who is very much looking forward to the Finals is Los Angeles Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, who took to social media to give his thoughts on the series:
Victor Wembanyama dominated the paint on defense during the Series against OKC while playing in a zone, but that won’t work against the Knicks given the 3-point shooting ability of Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby.

And for the Knicks, I’m wondering who’s going to guard Victor Wembanyama. They won’t have as easy of a time on offense due to the much better defensive ability of the Spurs compared to their previous matchups against the Hawks, 76ers, and Cavaliers.

What team will be affected the most? The Knicks because of their 8 days off, or the Spurs only having 3 days off after a grueling 7 game Series before Game 1?
This is set to be one of the most watched NBA Finals because both teams peaked at the right time and got hot in the…

Those are certainly some very legitimate questions that Johnson has and that many are anticipating getting the answers to in the coming games. Led by Jalen Brunson, the Knicks have been shooting lights out as a team and their ability to stretch the floor should help in bringing Victor Wembanyama away from the basket on defense. The Knicks have also been able to rest while the Spurs battled the Thunder in a grueling seven-game series so they could be tired and drained emotionally.
Trying to contain Wembanyama is its own issue though, the statistics point to Knicks forward OG Anunoby as having been the best player in the league at defending the Spurs’ phenom. Needless to say the answers to all of the questions Johnson and fans around the world have will be getting answered very soon.
NBA Finals winner will join Lakers as eighth straight unique champion
Whether it is the Knicks or Spurs who come out victorious, the winner of the 2026 NBA Finals will be the eighth consecutive unique NBA Champion, a group that includes the 2020 Lakers as no team has repeated since the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018.
