2015-16 Lakers Training Camp Recap: Day 5

The Los Angeles Lakers added a couple more injuries to the list on Day 5 of training camp. Marcelo Huertas has a hamstring strain and is not expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Utah Jazz. Larry Nance finished practice early with back spasms and is questionable for the Lakers preseason opener.

Metta World Peace, who’s been dealing with a calf strain the past couple days, was able to participate in five-on-five scrimmaging, and Byron Scott said D’Angelo Russell looked like his old self after being able to participate in the competitive parts of practice on Saturday. Russell had been very limited in practice the past couple days, due to a bone bruise causing foot soreness, but said he was feeling just fine after participating in practice on Saturday.

What will Kobe Bryant make this season? Find out here!

Scott says he’s unsure what the starting line-up will be for the Lakers first preseason game, but Kobe Bryant says he will definitely be playing in it.

“I’m definitely playing,” Bryant said after practice. “[People] come all the way out here… you [are going] to sit there on the bench? That’s not cool.”

Bryant practiced without restrictions on Saturday, competed in the five-on-five scrimmages, and said he’s looking forward to playing off the ball alongside Jordan Clarkson and Russell, even scoffing at the idea that he wants to be more involved in facilitating the offense.

“I don’t understand why you guys can’t figure this out yet. I do not like setting up the offense. I hate it. Phil made me do it years ago and I had to learn how to do it years ago, to set up the triangle,” Bryant said in response to a question about whether having the ball in his hands less would effect his ability to get into a rhythm.

“I haven’t played with point guards that are playmakers at heart. D’Angelo is a ridiculous playmaker, man. I’d much rather catch and shoot. Or catch and one, two-dribble pull-ups, you guys know I like scoring the ball, why the hell would I like setting the offense up.”

Lou Williams recently said he was amazed by Russell’s leadership, and his readiness to take on the responsibility at such a young age.

Scott said he’s not surprised, at all, by Russell’s ability to lead, noting that the Lakers saw that in both of his pre-draft workouts and in Summer League. Expectations are high for Russell and he understands they need to temper them, but Scott still anticipates their No. 2 draft pick to have “more ups this year than downs” this season.

“[I’m] not surprised veterans are looking at him saying, ‘Man this kid is a natural born leader.'”

The Lakers kick off their preseason opener against the Utah Jazz at the University of Hawaii at 3:00 PM local time, and 6:00 PM PST.

Sunday will tell us how we are doing, we are getting to many guys hurt, but we do get a break MON-TUE, maybe some light work.

  • Less than 22 Hours till the first Laker action can’t wait. I won’t be able to sleep. It’s like Lakers Christmas ! haha.

Tommorow will be interesting, we will finally get a chance to see a lot of players in action and we can all start debating who deserves to make the team and who will make the team. Let the Pre-season begin.

  • I think Byron has to make changes to his training camp. The injuries are ridiculous.

Love what I’m hearing from Kobe.

    GO KOBE, GO LAKERS!

  • Nick Young – back spasm (practiced yesterday and today)
    Larry Nance – back spasms
D’Angelo Russell – bone bruise (practiced today)
MWP – calf strain (practiced today)
    Marcelo Huertas – hamstring strain

Minor stuff. Let’s not make mountains out of molehills.

  • Now is the time to test the guys. To see what they are made off. To get them in game shape, We will need to give them a rest and breaks throughout the season but not right now. In a game we may play 9/10 Players. We currently have 19 players on the team.

Plus no one need to be tripping for 1) These games don’t mean anything, 2) We really need to see what we have at the end of the bench because we need to make some important decision as far as who stays and who gets cut or sent down.

    Likely Players Available

    PG Russel, Williams
    SG Clarkson, J.Brown, M.Frazier
    SF Kobe, Young, A.Brown, Holmes
    PF Randle, Bass, Kelly
    C Hibbert, Sacre, Black, Upshaw

I am very interested in seeing the players who have not made the team. [Huertas, J,Brown, Frazier, MWP, Holmes, Black, Upshaw]

  • He’s pushing these guys way too hard. Clarkson could barely get up the court. Williams was barely getting any lift on his jump shots. This is ridiculous. Then on top of that they don’t use any health tracking systems to avoid injuries like many other teams.

He did the same thing last year all through the season. Those “minor” injuries eventually turn into big injuries once a player starts favoring a certain leg or moving stiff because of back pain.

  • Byron is pushing them way too hard. Lol, Clarkson is jogging back on defense. You know if that kid had any hustle left in him he would be sprinting back. Plus, Louis Williams is missing easy jumpshots, barely getting off the ground. They won’t have anything left for tomorrow.

  • there is an absolute lack of concentration. it looks like no shot is going in. I hope they will not play this way come game time. so horrible to watch.

  • Scott has to Temper his practices…..He’s burning the players out in practice….Mitch might need to step in if injuries continue to mount up…..Lakers injuries are Self-Inflicted.

  • Stop being soft. Same training camps that Pat Riley used to run whip his guys into shape.

  • First of all … you’re not there at any of the practices so you can’t say he’s pushing them too hard.
Second of all … these are NBA BALLERS dawg. Grown men. Playing professionally for millions. If you’re at this level and can’t take some NBA conditioning, you shouldn’t be at this level. Don’t be soft.

  • They are human. Human’s break down and have injuries. Nobody else in the league is running practices like Byron Scott. Louis himself said it was the hardest training camp he has ever been to.

  • Lol, it’s being smart. This is not the 80s.

Lakers have no metrics and no devices/tracking to help prevent injuries. Why is it that the Lakers are too good to use biomechanical movement devices and the world champs are not?

Tom Thibodeau lost his job for not changing with the times and he is probably the 2nd best coach in the league.

  • True, but in the end Russell will have to learn what best for him with relation to bettering his game for the long-term. One thing tho IMO, is that he’ll have to work on (strength & conditioning) his lower body (similar to Steph Curry). It’s clear from looking at these scrimmages (etc.) that he’s not up to top LEVEL NBA conditioning (expected given his rookie season).

IMO, his lower body’s his weakness and given Curry’s past hx with relation to injuries it be best to for Russ to help thwart off similar circumstances to have a healthy career (preventative measure). As Scott’s brought up in the past, it helps to make the long grind of the season simpler.

  • Which is pretty much what Scott is emulating. I mean, you can overdo it (*cough* ’89 Finals *cough*) but for the most part, I do like BS getting them into peak shape as far as conditioning and similar goes.

Plus, repitition is how you learn. You do it over and over again to where it becomes natural.

  • Slight correction: Thibs lost his job due to running his players into the ground in-game and during the regular season, relying on the same players for too long of a stretch without rest. So far as I know, he didn’t lose the gig for doing that during practice in Training/pre-season.

  • As have many others. But it’s hard to argue with the results when that same mentality got us five chips in the 80s.

As it is, I applaud this approach if it means I don’t have to see out of shape Gasol getting gassed because of his lack of PT/conditioning. For far too many seasons, we’ve had players just not putting in the effort to be in the best possible shape they can be in, some worse than others.

    Russell, Clarkson, Bryant, Randle, Hibbert

  • They look tired AF except for Kobe who Scott would be foolish to have doing the same conditioning routine. First preseason game time to start judging this team nothing else until this point has been relevant.

  • Might be too late. Camp has already been around for 5 days and players are familiarizing themselves with the X’s and O’s. Unless Huertas gets hurt, might be late for us to bring in Telfair on a training camp deal in my opinion

  • The thing that really stands out in all these scrimmage videos is all of the missed shots, most of them short. I hope our shooting gets A LOT better than what we see so far. Kobe looks good, that is on the very plus side.

  • If you listen to other teams they also have hurt players, that’s just what happens caused by off season-but their small problems.

  • No Doubt! grown men can handle it. I want men and my squad, not boys. That’s another reason why Kobe is amazing ,he is in better shape than some of these kids.

  • It’s the same thing. They ran in practice and they ran in the games and they didn’t do anything to keep them from getting injured. By the end of the season they were banged up by the time the playoffs started.

  • Oh, for sure. But that underscores what I’m getting at. Gasol, when it came to PT/conditioning, is/was…well, I don’t want to say lazy…but, lacked the importance of it? He would only really hit the gym if the media/other players called him out on it enough but it wasn’t a focus of his, often doing just enough to get by. And that kind of attitude doesn’t consistently keep you winning.

It’s largely the reason why players so much smaller than him could push him off of his spot/box him out for a rebound/and generally just sout work him. As good as Gasol was, he would’ve been so much better if his physical body matched his skill level.

  • I disagree completely. Kobe was the only one who had the track record to criticize Pau’s work ethic and he only did it because Pau got bullied by a prime HOF player in Kevin Garnett.

  • See, I told you. The whole team shot 28% from the field against UTAH. It’s not like they were playing against the Spurs. They are going to get Byron out of there fairly quick.

  • So because you read an article that said Scott pushed them “to” hard and that’s why they lost, that makes it true? Let me guess … you also believe everything you read online? Or do you only believe articles that support your opinion?

Again, you’re worried about a meaningless preseason game. I don’t know if you’ve ever played competitive sports, but I can tell you during basketball we always had a hell week. Some guys couldn’t take it. But those who took it seriously were better conditioned than other teams who may have been more talented. Hard work pays off. Soft work pays others. Quit griping about four hours of practice a day. It’s not that damn serious.
