Lakers News: Lonzo Ball Reflects On Legacy, Importance Of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers began a three-game road trip with a win on Saturday, defeating the Dallas Mavericks in overtime. That was after overcoming a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter and despite blowing a five-poin lead in the final two minutes of regulation.

The win was the Lakers’ fourth in a row, and their first against the Mavericks since April 2013 — snapping a 14-game losing streak in their head-to-head meetings. It was a collective effort for L.A., which included nine points, seven rebounds, seven assists and one steal from Lonzo Ball.

Next for the Lakers is a matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies on the birthday and holiday to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.

Ahead of playing Monday, Ball spoke about how appreciative of Dr. King he is and everything the day represents, via Spectrum SportsNet

“Words can’t even describe it, to be honest. Everything that he’s done, it’s crazy. I’m glad we get to recognize him, and everything that we’re doing with all the shoes and t-shirts, it’s nice to show recognition. I don’t think any words can describe his legacy.”

The NBA annually does a terrific job in recognizing all that King accomplished in his trying and tragic life. That the Lakers are not only playing, but doing so in Memphis, adds another layer of significance.

However, on a personal level, Ball may not be able to join his teammates on the court. The rookie point guard was sent for an MRI, which revealed a minor left knee sprain, leaving him questionable for the game.

The Lakers might further be shorthanded if Brandon Ingram is unable to play due to a sprained left ankle, also suffered in the game with the Mavericks.
