Luka Doncic has been on an offensive tear the past few weeks, and the Los Angeles Lakers have benefitted as they entered their matchup with the Houston Rockets on a five-game winning streak.
Doncic has led the NBA in scoring for most of the 2025-26 season as his body transformation this past summer has allowed him to play much more effectively for longer stretches of time. Against the Rockets, Doncic wasted no time showing how gifted of a scorer he is as he got to his spots on the floor and carried the Lakers offense.
However, the second half was a different story as both teams had to fight tooth and nail to score the basketball. Los Angeles and Houston found themselves in a back-and-forth affair in the fourth quarter, but the former had the upper hand thanks to its stars and experienced role players.
The Lakers held on for a 100-92 victory, but more importantly created more distance between themselves and the Rockets in the standings. L.A. currently owns the third seed in the Western Conference and their win over Houston gives them a game-and-a-half lead over Houston.
Luka is the best first-quarter scorer in the league and he went right to work against Houston’s stout defense, using his own size and physicality to get his shots up. Doncic picked up where he left off the second quarter, though found himself acting as more of a facilitator in the second half.
Doncic is an offensive engine onto himself and he gave the NBA another reminder of that as he scored a game-high 36 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Deandre Ayton’s been reinvigorated lately, providing the two-way presence in the middle of the floor that Los Angeles absolutely needs to be successful. Ayton spent most of the evening largely floating against the Rockets, not scoring his first point until the second half.
However, Ayton saved his best when the Lakers needed him most as he come up with multiple huge offensive rebounds and putbacks in the closing minutes to seal the win. He was also great protecting the paint and cleaning the glass, two areas that Houston dominated for most of the evening.
Ayton had a modest seven points, but did pull down 11 rebounds including six on the offensive end.
What’s next for the Lakers
The Lakers will see the Rockets for a rematch on Wednesday in a game that will decide the postseason tiebreaker before continuing their road trip on Thursday against the Miami Heat.
