Luka Doncic has been on a historic offensive run the past few weeks, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to eight consecutive wins and nine of their last 10.
Doncic had another scoring outburst in the win against the Miami Heat, dropping 60 points on the second night of a back to back. Head coach JJ Redick praised Doncic’s outing and acknowledged that all he could do was watch his superstar put the team on his back.
“It was a superhero performance. I thought him really keeping us afloat early was really important,” Redick said on Spectrum SportsNet. “And then all of the groups there in the second quarter did a nice job and the group that started the second half to get us the lead. It was great. He made big shots, he made tough shots, made a lot of right reads. When he gets it going like that, some of it is you just kind of like let him go. His teammates felt that, they saw that… You just go down the list, the shotmaking was unreal tonight.”
Doncic continues to make a late push for MVP and Redick noted that the Lakers wouldn’t be in the position they’re in without him.
“It’s a special run that he’s on,” Redick said. “We’ve seen all-time greats like him go on these runs, and you just kind of gotta embrace it and enjoy the moment. Whatever we are, 20 games over .500, and obviously he’s missed time, AR’s missed time, LeBron’s missed time. To the MVP point, we would not be anywhere near the position we’re in without him having the season that he’s having. Particularly of late, he’s dominating right now.”
When asked why Doncic isn’t getting more MVP recognition, Redick had a simple answer.
“Because he complains to the refs. I don’t know.”
Los Angeles has beaten a slew of playoff teams these past couple of weeks and all of the wins required some late-game magic from Doncic. The Heat game is a perfect example as the Lakers trailed for most of the night before Doncic dug them out of their rut with a thrilling scoring display.
With only 12 games remaining in the regular season, it’ll be exciting to see what else Doncic has up his sleeve.

Doncic has been on a tear from deep lately and during the win over the Heat, he broke D’Angelo Russell’s Lakers franchise record for the most 3-pointers in a season. With 12 games to go, Doncic will have a chance to continue adding to that record.
