The Los Angeles Lakers saw their longest winning streak of the season, a 9-game run, end on October 23 in a 113-110 road loss to the Detroit Pistons. The defeat did not erase the standings progress Los Angeles has made in recent weeks, but it offered a sharp reminder of the thin margins they live with during this push up in the Western Conference playoff race.

For head coach JJ Redick, it was the first real bump in what had been a smooth run of form since the Lakers found their groove on both ends of the floor. The team had leaned on efficient nights from its stars, balanced scoring, and improved defensive communication to climb into a firm playoff position. Sports betting (French: pari sportif) enthusiasts had started to take notice of the Lakers as one of the hottest teams in the league, only to watch Detroit apply the brakes in a physical, high-intensity matchup.

The game carried the feel of a potential tenth straight win early, with the Lakers generating quality looks and keeping pace despite Detroit’s energy. As the night wore on, though, the Pistons dictated the tempo and repeatedly found ways to exploit small breakdowns, especially in transition and at the point of attack. Los Angeles tried to rally late behind its veterans and a series of timely baskets, but the execution never fully matched the standard set during the streak.

Detroit’s backcourt pressure shaped the game. The Pistons consistently turned ball pressure into paint touches and kick-out threes, pulling the Lakers’ defense into rotations that opened lanes. When the Lakers contained the initial drive, Detroit’s guards used screens to force switches, then attacked mismatches or found rolling bigs for quick finishes. Those sequences kept the Lakers scrambling and prevented them from setting their preferred half-court defense.

On the other end, Los Angeles struggled to maintain its offensive rhythm. During the win streak, the ball had moved quickly from side to side, with strong cutting and purposeful spacing opening gaps. Against Detroit, possessions bogged down into more isolation and late-clock attempts. The Lakers still found scoring stretches, but empty trips came at inopportune times, especially when there were chances to create separation or to respond immediately to Pistons runs.

Free throws and rebounding provided smaller, yet critical, edges. Detroit capitalized on second-chance opportunities and earned trips to the line by attacking the rim, keeping pressure on the Lakers’ interior defense, and adding to the Lakers’ cumulative fatigue, which has leaned heavily on its top players. Los Angeles, by comparison, did not fully leverage its physical advantages inside, settling more often on jumpers than forcing the issue at the rim.

Takeaways From Detroit Loss

Redick and his staff will view this loss as a teaching point more than a cause for alarm. Over the nine wins, the Lakers had found a clear identity built around defensive engagement, quick decisions with the ball, and defined roles within the rotation. A single defeat, even one that ends a long streak, does not erase that work. Instead, it highlights areas that had been masked by winning: occasional lapses in focus, stretches of stagnant offense, and the need for sharper closeouts and communication on the perimeter.

The coach’s emphasis all season has been on sustainable habits rather than short-term results. A 9-game win streak can amplify confidence, but it can also hide small cracks. In Detroit, those cracks showed just enough to flip a close game. Expect Redick to focus practice time on reinforcing ball movement, handling aggressive point-of-attack defense, and tightening set plays for late-game situations where a single possession can decide the outcome.

In the bigger picture, the loss hardly alters the Lakers’ season trajectory. They remain firmly in the upper tier of the Western Conference, with recent play validating the front office’s decisions and the chemistry they have built around their core. The group has already shown resilience, responding to early-season inconsistency with focused, professional performances over the last few weeks. One road loss to a motivated Pistons team does not change that story.

Looking Ahead After The Streak

The locker room, by all accounts, understands this moment. Veterans know that successful seasons often include a pivotal loss that sharpens focus before the playoffs. Younger players gain experience from close, high-leverage games where every defensive rotation and every box-out carries extra weight. For a team that has been trending upward under Redick, this defeat may serve as the kind of midseason correction that pays off when the stakes rise.

With the 9-game win streak in the rearview, the Lakers now face a simple test. Can they respond with the same energy, discipline, and collective purpose that fueled their rise, or will old habits creep back in? The next stretch of games will offer that answer, and if their recent form is any indication, Los Angeles will treat this loss as fuel, not a warning sign.
