This past season was an outstanding one for Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic. He led the league in scoring at 33.5 points per game while being named to his sixth All-NBA First Team and finishing fourth in voting for the NBA MVP award behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama.

Despite an outstanding career so far, Doncic has never finished higher than third in MVP voting. And while Doncic admitted that he would love to win the award, in a Spanish interview with Jorge Quiroga of Marca that was translated to English, he also reiterated that the most important thing he wants to win is an NBA Championship:

“Well, I don’t know, that’s for the media to decide. I don’t have that answer. Playing better, I don’t know. But well, although I want to win all the awards, the important thing is the ring.”

Doncic has never wavered from this mindset, which says everything about what the Lakers’ superstar is all about. The individual accolades are great and he appreciates the recognition, but ultimately it is about the team and hoisting up that Larry O’Brien trophy as an NBA Champion that means the most.

The question is whether the Lakers can take that leap from a good team into championship contention in a very tough Western Conference that features two teams in the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs that figure to be around for many years to come.

What the Lakers do this offseason will be key to that as the franchise has big decisions to make on star guard Austin Reaves as well as iconic forward LeBron James. Filling out the roster around Doncic will also be crucial and the front office is committed to finding the right types of players that best fit with their superstar guard.

With the right moves this summer, and the continued excellent play of Doncic, the Lakers could be able to accomplish both in the near future.

Luka Doncic calls this a ‘very important’ offseason for Lakers

Further pointing to Doncic’s desire to win a championship is his feelings on this past year, which he called a bad season solely because the Lakers failed to be the last team standing. Doncic also called this summer a very important offseason for the Lakers as they look to build the roster to a contending level around him.
