LeBron James rocked the NBA world on Tuesday morning when it was reported that he informed the Los Angeles Lakers he would playing elsewhere in 2026-27. The James era in Los Angeles ended after eight years, one championship and six playoff appearances.
There have been many rumors and stories since the team acquired Luka Doncic in February of 2025 about the quality of relationship between James and the Lakers. But in the end, reports claim that James was simply ready to move on despite Rob Pelinka and the Lakers wanting him back, according to Dave McMenamin and Shams Charania of ESPN:

It’s possible that fans won’t know the full story of the James-Lakers breakup for some time, as bigger truths always tend to come out after the transaction is finalized. But for now, it seems that Pelinka and company were open to bringing James back, and for whatever reason, the superstar felt it was time to move on.
Regardless of how it’s ending, there is no doubt that the partnership between James and the Lakers was a fruitful one for both sides. James came to the Lakers in the summer of 2018 when L.A. had a losing record for five consecutive years. Two years later, the Lakers were NBA champions.
James achieved a majority of his career milestones while wearing the purple and gold, most notably becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. And he helped usher in a new era of Lakers basketball when the franchise desperately needed a superstar leader.
Lakers potentially losing Marcus Smart
James is not the only unrestricted free agent that the Lakers are likely to lose, as defensive-minded guard Marcus Smart could also be on the way out the door. He declined his $5.4 million player option to become an unrestricted free agent, and all indications are pointing to him leaving L.A.
The biggest rumor is that he is on his way to the Houston Rockets, similar to Dorian Finney-Smith last offseason, and could be joining them on a three-year deal. L.A. will have to figure out how to replace James and Smart, two starters who played a massive role in getting the Lakers past the first round of the playoffs.
