The Los Angeles Lakers have enjoyed an outstanding run at the Las Vegas Summer League, being the only team to go undefeated and earning the top seed in the Summer League playoffs. A big reason for this has undoubtedly been the play of rookie guard Cameron Carr.
Carr is averaging 18.3 points on 46.5% shooting in his three appearances so far in Las Vegas and has looked the part of a player who could potentially play a role for the Lakers this season. His play has also stood out to former All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas, who has been very impressed so far.
“My pick is Cam Carr over there with the Lakers,” Thomas said on NBA TV. “We’ve been giving a lot of praise to the top 4-5 picks this week, but Cam Carr has been somebody I’ve seen since the combine, that probably had the best showing at the combine. And as you see him now in the Summer League, he’s a hooper’s hooper. He hoops.
“He can play, he can score, he can make plays, he can shoot the ball at a high level. I think he’s gonna have a real big impact on the Lakers just cuz he can space the floor, he can catch and shoot and he can put the ball on the ground and make a play for others and that’s always good when you’re a young guard coming into this league. So he’s impressed me the most out of, not the top guys, but still somebody in there where everybody respects this guy’s game.”
Carr has a lot of tools that make him a very intriguing prospect going forward. As Thomas noted he can space the floor as a catch-and-shoot player, but is also capable of putting the ball on the floor and finishing at the rim or finding his teammates. He also has great defensive potential with his length and athleticism.
The Lakers may have found themselves a steal with Carr as he has the tools as well as the attitude and mindset to be a difference-maker for this team and that might come sooner than many expected.
Cameron Carr says Lakers goal is to win Las Vegas Summer League championship
For many players the Summer League is about individual goals and improvements and while Carr is certainly focused on that, he wants team success more than anything as he made it clear the ultimate goal is for the Lakers to win the Las Vegas Summer League championship.
