Cameron Carr has been the early standout for the Los Angeles Lakers in Summer League as he has already shown to be a dynamic scorer.

The first-round draft pick was exception in the California Classic and then picked up where he left off against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Lakers’ win to kick off the Las Vegas Summer League, finishing with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Carr also contributed two blocks and a steal, but his biggest takeaway from the game was that he still needs to improve defensively.

“I gotta be better. I gotta be a lot better defensively,” Carr said after the win. “I can get as many deflections as I want, but if you give up a straight line drive, you still can’t help anybody. So I gotta be a lot better defensively, be more aware, talk and don’t be a lapse. Don’t be an area that people can go at.”

After dropping their first game in the California Classic, the Lakers have now won three in a row as Carr believes they are finding their stride.

“I feel like San Francisco was big time for us, we were able to get a rhythm and find our groove,” he said. “First game was kind of just like a knock the rust off type of game, the Warriors played a heck of a game, and then we turned around and came back and competed and had a heck of a game against Miami.

“I feel like all of those games kind of helped prepare for where we’re at now and I feel like we’re getting more and more comfortable and starting to find our our own pace, where we can be, what makes us. I feel like every game we’re gonna get better.”

The Lakers are guaranteed at least four more games in Las Vegas, which will give Carr a chance to stay consistent offensively while showing the defensive improvements he is looking for.

Cameron Carr enjoyed Las Vegas Summer League action

There always is an extra buzz at Thomas & Mack Center when the Lakers are playing in the Las Vegas Summer League, and Carr enjoyed the atmosphere in his first game.

“It’s big time. I enjoy every time I get to step on the court and just compete and have fun,” Carr said. “It’s a blessing from God, especially when my family is watching. Any time I get to play and my mom gets to watch me, I always get to have fun.”
