As the offseason winds down, the Los Angeles Lakers are still looking to round out their roster with potentially one more addition. One name who has recently come up is Dallas Mavericks wing Klay Thompson, who may be interested in returning home to Los Angeles.
Notably, Thompson could have signed with the Lakers back in 2024, but opted to sign with the Dallas Mavericks. Regardless though, Thompson clearly respects the Lakers’ history as he includes Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James in his all-time starting five:

Thompson obviously has Lakers ties as he father is Mychal Thompson, who played for the team and now is a radio broadcaster.
In the clip, the future Hall of Famer mentioned he grew up watching Bryant and O’Neal being the most dominant duo ever.
Additionally, during his tenure with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson shared plenty of battles with LeBron James, specifically in the NBA Finals. Thompson got to experience James’ heroics up close and unfortunately, Golden State found themselves on the wrong side of history in 2016.
Obviously, Stephen Curry sitting as his point guard is a no-brainer as well. Curry is regarded by many as the best shooter ever due to how he revolutionized the game of basketball. Then, Tim Duncan also goes without saying as one of the most fundamental players ever.
If Thompson ultimately finds a new home, perhaps he factors in the Lakers’ history into greater consideration along with reuniting with Luka Doncic once again.

As mentioned, the connection Thompson has with the Lakers is alive and well with his father employed there. Obviously, Dallas looks to be pivoting in a new direction with Cooper Flagg as their cornerstone.
Along with an influx of forwards on their roster, the Mavericks front office needs to shed some roster spot due to all of them deserving playing time. Mychal Thompson appears to be putting in time as a recruiter this summer too by trying to lure his son to the Lakers.
While Los Angeles made a clear decision to get younger, Thompson certainly would add another spot-up shooter to an already dynamic offense. However, at 35-year-old, the question is how much of a defensive impact he can make at the wing position, which L.A. desperately needs.
