Byron Scott Has Not Considered Reducing Kobe Bryant’s Minutes, Role

14 games into the 2015-16 Los Angeles Lakers season, Kobe Bryant has struggled to regain his form in his 20th season. Although Kobe is averaging 15.2 points, he is shooting a career-worst 31.1 percent from the field and 19.5 percent from three.

In the blowout loss against the Golden State Warriors, Kobe tied a career-low shooting performance by going 1-for 14. While the five-time champion believes there are bigger issues at hand, he has not been efficient and isolation plays have hurt the team’s ball movement.

Despite the struggles, head coach Byron Scott says he has not considered reducing Kobe’s role or minutes according to Baxter Holmes of ESPN:

At the age of 37 and coming off three consecutive season-ending injuries, it was necessary to put a minutes restriction on Kobe heading into the new season. While he is averaging 30.5 minutes through 11 games, Scott recently played him major minutes against the Detroit Pistons (36) and Toronto Raptors (37).

With the goal to keep Kobe relatively healthy for what may be the final season of his career, Scott will eventually have to reduce his role and minutes. For Kobe, he has previously found success as a facilitator, but has reverted back to being a high-volume shooter.

With the Lakers 2-12 to start the season, it will not get any easier for them. Nine of their next 10 games are on the road and if they do not address their issues soon, it will be interesting to see what develops between Scott, Kobe and the team’s young core.

LOL! And I mean it. I actually cracked up when I read the headline. Byron is here to fukk as all, including Kobe. The things he say are so bizarre that I can’t do anything but laugh at this point.

  • Byron Scott needs to stop acting like everyone is that stupid, we all know Kobe is not that Kobe anymore. When he was back last year, he showed he still had game left, but he showed that he could only do it on low minutes. Right now its even the minutes, I could see Kobe bouncing back, but not with Scott going oh he’s fine, not drawing up plays with finesse, and playing Lou at point over Huerta. Last season Scott was putting the season on Kobe, seems like he’s doing it again, which he can’t, this is not 2000s Kobe or pre Achilles injury Kobe. Scott should be pushing Kobe to be the Kobe we got right before he got hurt last year. We need more D, rebounding, and ball movement, Kobe can be that, why isn’t Scott making that happen? Kobe would definitely listen to Scott, Scott is too much trying to act like Kobe is MVP Kobe.

  • Did Lakers do something to wrong B Scott? Pretty sure he’s on some kind of personal vendetta spitefully going out of his way to do his part to rip the franchise up.

  • I think Scott does this because its Kobe, I would think he’s not stupid enough to seriously think Kobe is still the same. Then again last year it was totally Scott’s idea to play Kobe all those minutes, Kobe actually was thinking 32, but Scott was thinking 36 to 40 minutes. I don’t care how great Kobe looked, playing him over 32 minutes was insane. I wouldn’t just write Kobe off yet, but I would first try to put him in a better situation to succeed, like better plays, lower minutes, coming off the bench. Feed the ball to Kobe needs to stop, playing Lou at point needs to stop, and probably should play Black over Nance.

  • ….it sounds like BS is giving fans and media the big middle finger. Kupchak, do something, please. This guy isn’t helping the Lakers-at all.

  • Or maybe he was hired by sinister mob boss Mike D’Antoni to implode us all. Now that would be cruel.

  • Wait! First he says he has to cut his minutes back. Then he says he’s not going to reduce his minutes? This guy…

  • Kobe must have some incriminating photos of both Kupchak and BS to get away with this pathetic buffoonery. Mark this down as a lost year for Lakers improvement.

  • If this was coach Pop he would have been benched a long time ago. This is why Pop one of the top coaches of all time. He’s willing to do what is necessary to win. BS, not so much.

  • Are you serious? Wow! never in my 30 years of watching the NBA have I seen this team sink any lower. It is truly a pity. Maybe if we lost to Philly we’d see a heartbeat from FO.

  • Byron your minutes and role needs to be reduced. This guy is clearly trying to avoid any confrontation with kobe, and no one really confronts him, james worthy and all those on the lakers channel wont even name him, its always the players fault. I knew byron wouldn’t control kobe, this is basically what D’antoni did with him, only thing is D’antoni was worse he played kobe and nash more, and ran them both to the ground.

  • You think he is a double agent for the clippers? Should make sense. hehe

  • hey scott have i ever told you that you’re an idiot bro?………………………..you’re an idiot bro.

  • Let’s be Truthful…..Even Pop wouldn’t have no say so over Kobe…..Phil is better than Pop and he didn’t have that control when it came to Kobe….When you have players like Kobe,MJ, or Magic your hands are tied…you either Resigned or get fired…It’s a player league….

  • Kobe doesn’t bother me at all. He has nothing left but also nothing to prove. It’s just a Legend playing out his last games, and the team is gonna be awful with or without him anyway. I just think we messed up with D’Angelo Russell big time. We should’ve just left Clarkson at pg and drafted a legit big to go with him and Randle. Clarkson has a size advantage over most pg’s and the quickness and explosiveness to put the defense on their heels. He’s the one who needs the ball in his hands. He showed solid passing and playmaking skills last year when that was his role. He’s not looking to pass nearly as much this year only because his role is way different now. I would trade Russell and let JC run the team.

  • Mitch Kupchak: “Byron what exactly would you say you do here”

Byron: “I’m a people person! I have people skills”

  • I think a game against the 76ers will lift everyone’s spirits. When do we play them?

  • It’s way too early to say that yet. We need a bigger timetable to make an accurate assessment of who he is as a player. Yup. I would be insulted if I were JC though. The whole reason they drafted Russell was because they didn’t think JC was good enough to be a PG yet as a rookie he was better than Russell. They said Russell is a “pure PG” yet JC was averaging more assists than him. So I wonder how those bozo’s feel now? JC wasn’t good enough to them yet his replacement isn’t that great.

  • JC started blowing up when kobe’s season was over, i wonder how russell would do without kobe

  • Is Clarkson not currently averaging 15 ppg playing alongside Kobe? Which is up from his average last season?

  • Just funny because clarkson absolutely choked last night, unlike Russell who is 4 years younger he looked lost and overwhelmed out there. While Russell held Thompson to 0 for 6 shooting in the first quarter.

  • Kobe will be more effective with the second unit. Let him come off the bench and let him facilitate and shoot less….And let BS come of the bench, hire a new head coach nyahahahahahahaha!

  • Kobe took 5 contested shots, and 9 uncontested, towards tne end the defenders stopped contesting his shots, knowing they would lead to easy possessions. Two of his shots were bail out shots.

    1. Kobe runs around Hibbert Screen pass from Randle takes long two just past the elbow, contested, brick. 11 seconds remain in shot clock
    2. Kobe ball at top of 3 point line, pass from Russell, takes his man off the dribble, pull up at the elbow, contested, brick, 4 seconds remain in shot clock
    3. Kobe receives ball at elbow from Bass, 8 seconds remain on shot clock, backs down his man, turn around jumper just outside short corner, contested, brick, 5 seconds remain on shot clock, Lou Williams wide open at 3 point line
    4. Kobe stops bad pass from Lou Williams, short corner 3 point attempt, uncontested, airball, 2.4 seconds remain on shot clockbail-out shot
    5. Kobe pass from Russell, receives at 3 point line, uncontested, airball 6 seconds remain on shot clock
6 Kobe dribbles the ball past half court, takes contested 3 point attempt, made!, 19 seconds remain on shot clock
    7. Kobe dribbles the ball past half court, give and go with Hibbert, 3 point attempt, uncontested, brick, 14 seconds remain on shot clock
    8. Kobe well outside 3 point line, receives ball from Clarkson, pump fakes, very long 3, uncontested, brick 1.4 seconds remain on shot clock bail-out shot
    9. Kobe receives ball in transition from Russell, wide open, layup, miss
    10. Kobe just past 3 point line, with Hibbert deep screen, dribbles for 8 seconds, takes 3 point attempt, contested, airball, 8 seconds remain on shot clockClarkson wide open at 3 point line
    11. Kobe receives ball at elbow from Randle lost handle, pump fakes, dribbles left, mid range 2 attempt, uncontested, bricks so hard it gets stuck 2 seconds remain on shot clock
    12. Kobe receives ball outside 3 point line from Russell, beats his man, 3 point attempt, uncontested, brick, 4 seconds remain on shot clock
    13. Kobe cutting at the elbow, receives pass from Randle, takes on man, he does not contest short 2, brick 2 seconds remain on shot clock
    14. Kobe receives pass on the wing, dribbles past the key, fadeaway short 2, uncontested, brick

  • Honest question for all of us Laker fans. When do Byron’s contributions as a player become earased due to his actions as Head Coach?

  • more attacking on Kobe?
what were doing in MJs last year as a wizard?
were you trolling around bashing him too?
    i bet…………

  • Nah cause he wasn’t wrecking my team, he was wrecking the Wizards. You should go ask a long term Wizards fan about how they feel about the MJ distraction. I have a friend who is a Wiz and he said that final year was just a complete sideshow carnival.

  • It depends on if he beats the 76ers next Tuesday, he could be sacked next Wednesday. Here’s hoping.

  • i th ink he might……but he cant bench dangelo in the 4th quarter.
he cant play bass at center.
    he cant play sacre period.
and he has to limit Kobe;s minutes.
He cant control Kobe, but he should advise Kobe to take better shots.
Kobe himself should be more aware of this being in the NBA for 20 years.
i really hate seeing him struggle and ill always root for him.
But hes gotta do something different. too many more of those games and even guys like me are gonna be like Kobe whats goin on here?

  • yea i bet.
but Kobe isnt doing that to the Lakers.
he is trying to mentor them and really help.
hes just shooting terrible right now.
i can admit it but even with Kobe scoring 25 a game we still would lose all these games.
Kobe cant do it all bro……
its a team effort Kobe doesnt ruin the wins.

  • Next week ur coach is going to come out and say he’s increasing his minutes! !

  • Kobe ruins every damn thing. He doesn’t play no team ball nor does he mentor anyone, he doesn’t even practice with the team. He kills the ball movement, and has the highest usage rate on the team. He asks for the ball every single time the ball goes past halfway. He plays his own system, haven’t you heard DLo and Nick Young calling him out? He cannot change, he still thinks he can do it all by himself. The guy has no business being an NBA player anymore, he is only there because he is basically a mascot now. Very similar to Jordan’s final year where they played him over 40 minutes a game just to showcase him at the expense of anything else.

  • Just a guess, If the Lakers lose to the damn 76ers and stop them from getting their worst ever start record, and Byron is still the coach the following day, that tells you that he is unsackable. I’m pretty sure Kobe calls the shots anyway, and he won’t want Byron gone, because what other coach in their right mind would enable him to the extend that Byron has?

  • great question.. i simply don’t know. kobe’s been terrible and this is tough to watch. byron needs to go, too. i’d go ahead and see what mark jackson is up to and if he’d be interested in the gig. that might even entice harrison barnes to sign an offer sheet with us over the summer.

  • Mark Medina ‏@MarkG_Medina 8h8 hours ago
Kobe did not practice today. Everyone else did

This is the great mentor right here. In my day, if you didn’t practice you didn’t play either.

  • Aaw shut up clown. He’s not the first over the hill Legend to do this. Remember guys like Larry Bird and David Robinson couldn’t practice often with back problems when they were on their last legs. You act like Kobe’s the first. Wake up.

  • Larry’s a good example, he knew when to call it a day. If you can’t even practice with your team mates. But that is besides the point anyway. The point is that Kobe is self purported mentor. What kind of mentor doesn’t show up to practices? I don’t see KG splitting on his role as a mentor, or even MWP for that matter.

  • And you have no interest in seeing the Lakers move on. I’d rather be an idiot than some clown stuck deep in the recesses of the past like you.

  • Frankly speaking Kobe’s minutes doesn’t matter. How does an additional 5-7 minutes a game or 15-20 minutes a week make a difference in an NBA players game? Byron is giving him ample time to recover and rest in practice and off days. If Kobe is pathetic in first 28 minutes a game, how can you expect additional 7 minutes will impact his performance for next games even after 3-4 days of rest.

Having said so, I got the leaked transcript of Byron’s interview with Lakers.

Mitch: Why should we hire you?

Byron: Defence. Defence. Defence. Defence. Kobe. Showtime. Defence. Old school. Defence. Olden but Golden days. Defence.

Mitch: Well, you don’t make much sense but we understand what you bring to table. But you haven’t answered why should we hire you and not any other coach who can teach Defence too.

Byron: Kobe. Showtime. Kobe. Championships. Old School. Suicide runs. Rebounding. Basics. Kobe. Showtime.

Mitch: Come on man, you have been saying this since your last 3 interviews. We are very close to hire Mike Dunleavy Sr. So, last time, give us your plan and stop treating us like LA media.

Byron: Ok, you have taken huge risks with CP3, Nash and Howard trade. Legendary stuff you pulled it off and were favourites to win championships and form dynasty but it didn’t work out. Now you don’t have picks or players or cap-space for Free Agents or Trades. Let me make you an offer you cant refuse. I will give you each and every pick in next 3-4 years which you can use to get good players in draft. Lock them up for long time deals or trade them for future superstars, your choice. You have given Kobe his retirement package as a thank you note. He wont accept it happily and will try to win more games making us lose draft spots. Let me handle him and his ego, making him happy to let you do your work. I have very good track record to get and develop lottery picks and I will do it again. I know this game like the back of my hand. Lakers media will be bombarded with all nostalgic references and showtime and Defence quotes to save them from memories of Da’Antoni era and hypnotize them to our happy Showtime era. I can….

Mitch: Say no more. you’re hired. Wear black suit and tie, get your buddies, we will start with the Showtime reunion at Monday evening 4. Dont be late, Mister.

Byron: Punctuality. Work ethic. Defence. Kobe. Showtime. Defence.

Mitch: Haha, I like you already.

    TRUE STORY.

  • Choked? That was his first bad game since last season. Bustell has yet to have a good game. He didn’t hold Thompson to anything nor did he look lost. Go kill yourself. You are beyond delusional. Don’t talk to me.

  • Technically it’s 11 ppg with Kobe. Or 125 points in 11 games at 256 total minutes played together. 84 points in 14 games without Kobe on the floor at the same time. 175 total minutes. The average works out almost identically.

  • Scott is not as dumb as you all think; when he was hired it was due to Kobe having a previous connection with him. Scott is not going to bite the hand that fed him in the first place. BS will not go against any of Kobe’s wishes and if that means leaving the minutes limitation alone then so be it.

If he is going down its better to go with Kobe than going against him; either way Scott understands he will get fired anyways.

    It’s as simple as that.

  • Still too raw , in D’league Upshaw averages – 5 pts , 4 rbds , 2 blks per game , those blocks would be nice though.

  • On another note, I’ve said this before the season began that Kobe had an agreement with Scott that if he played 30 or less per game then no one on the team will either. Guess what? That first game against the Wolves no one was even 30 minutes; the team saw its huge lead slip away in The 3rd Q and Scott still continue with Kelley and Bass until they’ve lost all momentum and
    it was too late.

In many games subsequent to that first game it became obvious Scott had to play the starters much more minutes to be competitive and letting guys like Russell and Randle well past 30 minutes and you guessed it Kobe too. No way is Kobe going to play like a reserve player’s minutes. Kobe won’t take a back seat for no one even if he goes for 1/14

  • FO needs to realize when they hire people its because they believe the person can coach the team, develop the players, find a way to win against other teams and take responsibility. While Byron’s contributions as a player will never be forgotten he has no business coaching this team. 2 cents.

  • that’s why the team never know what to do…because they have a coach like this….freaking dude…

  • kobe says he wants to play around 28mpg hes playing 31 and you still think kobe is the one calling the shots lol

  • Knowing the front office I totally see Scott coaching all season, Scott and the front office are more likely to scare our young players away then signing a big FA

  • on the season with kobe clark averages 17.4ppg on 53% and 46% from three.

with out kobe on the season 13.8ppg on 37%and 28% respectively.

now tell me which is better

  • wow you dont understand basketball at all. clark is trash inbn the 3 games with out kobe this season. kobe gets him easy shots most of the time and it gets him going

  • Good thing I was talking about last season, are you really still making excuses for Kobe? Are you not watching the games?

  • I do , because the grand scheme is Tank. Hate to say it but all the signs point to that, can’t see how Dr Buss would allow this nonsense to go on.

  • reduce role to a decoy(more passing) than the designated floor spacer(let swagP and Lou take this)

reduce minutes OF COURSE! you can overplay them young guys but not the veteran guys(Kobe,MWP)

swallow your pride scott so the lakers can win more games, if this trend continues, lakers on a pace for 15 wins smh not the swan song we want for Kobe or the year the future big 3 start their career

  • black over bass

sad thing is the reason bass gets PT over black is for bass to become a trade bait for a backup center…should have just traded(say for birdman) instead of signing these guy

  • I wont be shocked if Kobe asks for a players-only meeting in the next week…this gotta just stop….especially scott’s pride, Scott is pushing Kobe to injuries …………..please Lakers MNGT. if yall are really concerned on this organization just fire scott……scott is a grown up man, a professional he will understand it if he gets fired

    Hire somebody please(JVG,Shaw,Brooks,Messina,etc) ANYBODY….

  • in their prime, you are absolutely right but in the last 3yrs of their career or so… they will follow the coach more

  • ok here’s the deal

IF lakers lost to philly PLEASE FIRE SCOTT IM BEGGING U MITCH PLEASE…or better yet talk to Scott and give him a chance to resign instead of getting fired(will save both their image)

  • Oh Phillies and Okafor, please the beat UP the Lakers for your first win of the season. We beg you all. Signed, Lakers Fans.

  • I don’t know. I came into this season with low expectations. I figured we would struggle for the first half and then gel at the all star break. But my thought was that Kobe was going to go Tim Duncan for us. Lower the minutes, facilitate, pass, those things. I didn’t think he would be going 1 for 15 jacking up contested shots for 30 minutes. How does that help anyone? And for all the people saying fire scott…why? Hate to say it, but as long as Kobe is trying to be Kobe but missing shots, no coach is going to make any difference.

  • And one more thing then I’m out….your team has 2 wins and was just blown out. Wouldn’t you be considering anything and everything? I mean like ANYTHING?

  • I think the best way to make Kobe look good is to let him take 50 shots a game.
    50 shots x 20% = 10 shots scored, average: 2.5 per shot = 25 points…
Maybe he gets a few points from the line.
If this doesn’t work, let him shoot 100 or 120 times and everybody else goes for the rebound.

  • KB’S new Nike ad : “JUST RETIRE “!!!! PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP and please take BS with you !!!!!!!!!

  • how is it making kobe look good? if anything he’s looking embarrassing are you not watching games? he’s pretty far from looking good

  • At this point he’s Peter getting away with anything (shot selection/TPS reports) but his whole career has to be Lumberg, “Shaq could you come in today and practice Hmmm yeah”
Jim Buss is Milton, “Jeanie where’s my stapler”

  • kobe is playing horrible but for some reason the team still does better when hes on the court. idk if its because other teams still respect him to much or what but he still gets double teams when he should not be getting any.

kobe has looked like trash but the team still looks better when hes on the court

  • Kobe is going to retire!
    two years from now!
does that make you happy hater?

  • hey that could actually work!
imagine 4 people boxing out instead of just 1.
wed get 4x as many rebounds!
plus he could shoot 50 times instead of just 10 times.
    it could work….

  • he doesnt sound like a fan.
i dont like russell much but i support him 100 pct.
    hes a Laker now.
and hes part of our family…

  • its not only kobe jacking shots left and right, he plays no defense after missed shots. instead of running back and defending his man, he always tries to steal the pass from the rebounder. its a total debacle watching him play. does FO really think this is what laker fan’s want to see.

  • Kobe can’t run back and defend anybody at this point in his career…even if he wanted to.

  • It’s almost as though Scott wants to put Bryant on the DL. 30 min a game is insane.

    Should be more like 22-25….TOPS.

  • Legit lol’d. ^^

So Russell, Randle, and Clarkson will at some point go off on Byron’s clipboard in a deserted gym then I take it?
