Byron Scott: Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace Are Lakers Best Defenders
Byron Scott: Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace Are Lakers Best Defenders
Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

With only one win in seven games thus far, the Los Angeles Lakers are struggling with their defense being the main area of concern for the coaching staff.

Before the loss to the Miami Heat, Los Angeles is putting 104.3 points per game (fourth in the NBA) but are one of the worst teams in the league in points allowed at 110.7 per contest (29th in the NBA).

Head coach Byron Scott believes the reason for the Lakers problems on the defensive end of the floor is because the squad’s best defenders are also the oldest players on the team, via Ethan J. Skolnick of the Miami Herald.

It’s not a good sign that two players over the age of 35 are the best defenders on the squad. Although Roy Hibbert has been a sizable upgrade in the paint, the veteran center needs help to get this defense on track and to depend on Bryant and World Peace isn’t going to get it done.

For the majority of their NBA careers, World Peace, and Bryant were considered two of the best perimeter defenders in the league. Metta won the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award back in 2004 and Kobe earned NBA All-Defensive First Team honors nine times throughout his career. Unfortunately, their best days are behind them, and it’s time for the younger players on the team to step up defensively.

D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, and Julius Randle have all shown signs of promise throughout the first six games of the season, but the defensive effort has left something to be desired. All three of these promising young players will need to improve on the defensive end of the floor if the Lakers hope to right the ship this season.

Byron Scott just has no shame at all.

  • Yeah ‘cuz Kobe’s 112.3 Def. Rtg. is top 2, right? Does Scott even look at the stats?

Nance Jr. has an 86.3 Def. Rtg and Black’s is 93.2. Talk about being biased, Byron. I can’t wait ’til the FO fire your dumbass.

  • Hold It….MWP I’ll concede…but Kobe of late…Not So….. Disagree Byron…..Hibbert and MWP…Yes…and Brown if he gets to play.

  • Unless you are talking abt kobe’s def. LOL that’s typical BS when it comes Kobe.

  • He’s right, but not because those guys are so good, but because the other guys are so bad — that’s why they drafted Anthony Brown who, despite being a rookie, plays pretty good perimeter defense (just doesn’t rotate worth a darn).

  • That stat is misleading, because it’s based on points given up while the player is on the floor and Bryant is typically on the floor against starters.

And no, that does NOT mean Bryant is a good defender.

  • Why does this clown still have a job? He is literally the worst, most incompetent, miserable coach in the NBA.

  • Yeah I know, but still. His defense consists of getting beat on pick-and-rolls, and switching everything. Main thing on defense (as a team) that really pisses me off: switching. Our players are too slow on defense and/or don’t make an effort to stay with their man and then decide to switch, which creates mismatches for the opposition and they score easily. I thought BS was known for teaching great D, but I haven’t seen too much of it aside from the aforementioned young guys.

  • Fair enough…get no argument from me on that one.

And for the record, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by LNJ’s defense. Won’t be an All-Star but he should be a good all-around NBA player.

  • Message is for everyone to “Play some darn defense” !

But even when your unable to do that just out score your opponent.

Defense comes down to having the desire and passion to commit to doing some grunt work.

    Go Lakers !

  • very missleading. kobe is playing vs starters and vs sf,s who hes giving up size too. kobes sg defense so far this season is 89.3defensive rateing and at pg its 95.8

    the sf is killing kobe

  • BS : “i’m in love with the coco”
Coach must be on something to be trippin’ this bad, MWP i agree. Kobe has been bad on D, not getting back after taking a shot. Letting guys past him resulting in dunks (Barton). C’mon Scott, don’t play favorites. If you do that your players won’t respect you.

  • Byron must have some vodka in those gatorade cups on the sideline. Metta? Maybe, he does put in effort, but Kobe? Stop it fam. Kobe never plays defense and doesn’t even get back after he bricks yet another jumper. Wow this man is crazy.

  • He’s been on multiple all defensive teams. Everyone knows about the type of defender he used to be. He’s a terrible defender now though.

  • SwaggP has been better def than Kobe. BS is just throwing almost the whole team under the bus. This is a new low for BS.

  • Metta puts in the effort and everyone can see that BUT you gotta pay attention to his foot speed; they are slow and the smart players who are being guarded knows all they need to do is stop and reverse direction and Metta looked like he is wearing lead metal shoes.

Actually you guys dont seem to understand the context of what Bscott is referring to . So let me help you. Byron said that Metta and Kobe (he’s talking about perimeter guys not the bigs) are the best defenders because they UNDERSTAND 1. where to be on the floor at what time 2. how to shade their man and force him left, right, middle, baseline, etc 3. they know how to play certain guys because they’ve been around the game for so long. its not new to them. they know pretty much everyone’s tendencies. and those they dont know they know how to pick up on them quickly because if you’ve seen a few of these same type of guys you already know what’s coming next. that comes with being in the game for that long and both playing at a high level defensively for a very long time. This is not about DEF Ratings. so leave that at home.

The manner in which all NBA teams are running heavy screen n rolls/pops and swinging the ball like crazy means you can no longer lock down your man, like you could in the 90’s, 80’s, early 2000’s, etc. You now have to have a solid TEAM defensive scheme that everyone follows. But each individual player has to understand the nuances of defense. did you hear metta in post game talking about “ball , You, man” Thats basic stuff, but in the nba as a young guy you will get caught just watching. Maybe its because these guys are really that good. you’re in awe of them in moments and that can kill you. or you dont believe that person will get open that fast and all they need is a split second. It’s similar to the jump from college football to the nfl. its timing that changes drastically. everything moves so much quicker. due to the size, length, speed, quicks, athleticism of all the guys in the league. where you could’ve recovered in college on a bad reach attempt you cant in the nba. so to pull off that reach attempt your other teammates have to know thats how you play so they know how to cover for you(this is why what metta does when he reaches looks bad on a bad defensive team but would make perfectly good sense on a solid defensive team).

defense is not about desire and passion only. thats actually secondary to defensive intelligence. people continue to overlook a person’s defensive IQ. it means something. it matters. There’s a reason some of the best defenders in the nba are smart. As crazy as metta is, you can tell he’s still some what intelligent(he was even pretty good in school in his college days). Think about it like this. to be a great defender. you have to know what the other person is going to do(anticipation). To do that very well you have to study people. It’s social work/and psychological as well. The same patterns that the analyst get thru systems and cameras, etc. is the same thing guys like Metta , Kobe, K lenard, etc are doing with their minds. They are studying a team’s playbook. They are studying player tendencies. The are studying players strengths and weaknesses. (he is strong up top but is much weaker in his core and legs.. means i can root him out of position in the post before he ever catches the pass. so by the time he gets that pass he’s out of scoring position.) Those little things are super important. Then you throw in the desire and passion. and you have a great defender. All passion = a bunch of fouls and missteps.
Trying hard is not enough. They are trying hard now.

  • I agree it takes a bit of intelligence to be a “great” defender. But we can count the number of “great” players on the team with one finger. So we are looking for a few good defenders which it really doesn’t take a lot of intelligence to become a “good” defender.

We need players to give better effort and care more about playing well on both sides of the ball and to back that up with all out hustle and effort. I don’t personally believe every player on the team is “trying hard” on defense. If that were the case we would at least be 3-4 right now IMO.

So the key may be to see that so call “trying hard” has not worked. so hustle a bit more and try harder until you get the desired results(more wins).

tailormade2 you made some good points. But we have to work with the young players we have and help them build their basketball intelligence and catchup to the intellect and speed of the game.

Until them give me passion and madd effort.

  • I see what you’re saying and I know I goofed on that comment lol.

Even though we lost against the Magic, team defense has definitely improved so I’m looking forward to see how that goes by December. Last chance for Byron, if we can’t get a W in the next 3 games I think (hope) he’s done.
