Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol Amongst World’s 50 Highest Paid Athletes

NBA: Houston Rockets at Los Angeles LakersKobe Bryant isn’t the only Laker to rake in big bucks this last season, even though he’s sitting in fourth place in the newest version of the Sports Illustrated Fortunate 50. Two of Bryant’s teammates, Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard, also finished in the top 50, which was good enough to get them on SI’s list.

Howard finished 31st on the list, with $19.5 million in salary and $2.4 million from endorsements for a total of $21.9 million.

Gasol was 37th, bringing in $19 million from his NBA contract and $2.1 million from endorsements. Gasol’s total was $21.1 million for the year.

Neither Howard or Gasol was on the Fortunate 50 list a season ago.

The Lakers are one of just two teams to have three players on the list, the other being the Miami Heat (LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh).

I guess now we know why the team is looking to shed some contracts this summer and get under that luxury tax threshold.
