Game Recap: Lakers Blown Out By Warriors In Preseason Finale

The Los Angeles Lakers enter their final preseason game looking for another win against the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers will enter this final preseason game without Kobe Bryant, but Coach Byron Scoot says that Kobe will play in the season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.

What will Kobe Bryant make this season? Find out here!

Lou Williams will be available tonight for the Lakers and will try to find a rhythm next to Marcelo Huertas as part of the second unit. The Warriors were without Klay Thompson in the first exhibition against the Lakers, but Klay will be available and in the starting lineup tonight for the Warriors.

The key for the Lakers will be to stay healthy, and it appears that a few Lakers are still fighting for a roster spot. With Huertas being a “lock” according to Coach Scott, the final spot will come down to Metta World Peace and Jabari Brown. The Lakers will use this final preseason game to tune up for the home opener on Wednesday.

First Quarter

The Warriors registered the first two points on the board with Thompson coming off of a curl for the mid-range jumper. D’Angelo Russell display his range on the following possession and made a jumpsuit on step inside of the three-point line. Julius Randle flexed his muscle on the next Lakers possession and completed a three-point play. Steph Curry caught fire and score the Warriors next eight points, draining a long two and back-to-back three pointers, giving the Warriors a 10-5 advantage. Randle continued to attack Draymond Green off of the dribble, displaying fancy footwork and finishing at the rim. Steph Curry assisted Green on another three-pointer for the Warriors, giving them a 21-10 lead with five minutes remaining in the first. Nick Young entered the contest and made his first three-point attempt, but it was matched on the other end by Klay Thompson. The Warriors continued their hot shooting making 7-9 from the three. Just before the quarter expired, Huertas found Ryan Kelly streaking down the court for the dunk, but the Lakers still trail 39-29.

Second Quarter

Julius Randle started the second quarter struggling offensively, traveling with the basketball on two consecutive possessions. D’Angelo Russell blocked a shot defensively and then assisted an Anthony Brown three-pointer, but once again the Warriors matched it with another three-pointer of their own, extending their lead to 46-32. D’Angelo Russell fouled Shaun Livingston on a jumper as the shot clock expired, but Livingston still managed to drain the shot and the Warriors lead by 20. Huertas froze the defense with a series of ball fakes and found Brandon Bass down low, but he was fouled on the layup attempt. The Lakers struggled stopping the Warriors in transition, and Golden State was able to extend their lead to 25 points with three minutes left in the half. Ryan Kelly grabbed a rebound and took the ball coast-to-coast for a contested right-handed layup, but the Lakers still trailed 72-50 at the half.

Third Quarter

The Warriors picked up where they left off and went on a 10-2 run and extended their lead to 30 points. Hibbert handed the ball off to Anthony Brown out of the post, and Brown converted a layup plus the foul. Once again, the Warriors matched the three-point play with a three-pointer of their own. Anthony Brown continues his hot shooting and knocked down an long two from the corner. Lou Williams found Russell streaking down the lane for an open layup, cutting the Lakers deficit to just 27 points midway through the third. Huertas turned the ball over and Steph lobbed it from just in front of half court and Andre Igoudala finished with a dunk at the rim, putting the Warriors up 100-71. The Warriors crashed the offensive glass and padded their second chance points, increasing their lead to 38 points. The Warriors dominated the Lakers on both sides of the floor in the third quarter, and went into the fourth up 112-74.

Fourth Quarter

Both teams started off slow in the fourth as the Lakers started the quarter with Russell, J. Brown, A. Brown, Bass, and Randle. A pair of free throws from Bass were the only early points for the Lakers. A floater from Russell gave the Laker their first basket but a Brandon Rush three kept Golden State ahead 117-78. Anthony Brown continued his solid outing with back-to-back three pointers and Randle got a layup for the Lakers. Metta World Peace checked in to massive cheers midway through the quarter and split a pair of free throws on his first possession. The Warriors continued to push their lead out further as no one could miss. A 3-point play from Williams got the Lakers deficit under 40 but Chris Babb hit a three to respond. A layup from Huertas gave the final margin of 136-97.

That #29 ranked defense still stands.

  • Don’t understand why Scott doesn’t play Black. Bass and Kelly is not going to work. Let Black and Bass come off the bench, and occasionally Kelly to stretch the floor.

  • This is why we need to get rid of Byron Scott and hire Tom Thibodeau or Scott Brooks!!!

  • I hope this is just a training camp fatigue. Cause if this is our identity this season, it’s gonna be a long one…

  • Hey I’m glad that Robert Sacre was there at the end of the bench to cheer on the guys. I’m also glad that Robert Upshaw wasn’t there, I mean who needs a big body like that when you can put the highly unathletic Ryan Kelly and jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none Brandon Bass as the second unit bigs. I’m also glad that Tarik Black sat out the whole game, as there was no need for any hustle in the paint.

  • Our starters sucked big time, the bench should start the next game- that is the game to forget, the starter had no movement , and playing to slow, well chins up it cant get any worst, even though we were playing the CHAMPIONS and they did not lost a step from last year—IT WILL GET BETTER AS THE SEASON MOVES ON.

  • I like the flow of Warriors basketball. They play almost effortless, just execution. But i hate Curry’s, Klay’s and Draymond’s arrogance.

  • I thought Kelly and Jabari Brown both looked good as well. Bass and Lou Williams also looked like they belonged out there.

As I have said there will be a lot of ups and downs with so many players who have not played together before.

But defense will still need to be stressed. Not that the Warriors or any team will shoot the ball as well consistently. Defense or no defense they were on tonight.

As I have said there will be a lot of ups and downs with so many players who have not played together before. And I said we can’t get too high on the highs or too low on the lows. It was preseason and we will have to see who makes the final roster.

The Warriors already have team chemistry and have played together a while and it showed tonight. That was pretty much the difference. Along with the fact they had their best player(s) on the floor and we were short a player or two of our best.

But defense will still need to be stressed. Not that the Warriors or any team will shoot the ball as well consistently. Defense or no defense they were on tonight.

Clarkson got injured and Nance Jr., Kobe and for the most part MWP all didn’t play neither. We need a change of pace player who can push tempo and run the floor.
D’ Angelo still has to learn how to effectively run the floor. I think he will get better in time playing with veteran player who are there to help the young players.

  • To think a first time head coach got them playing that way. Meanwhile Byron Scott has the Lakers playing god awful stuff on both ends.

  • Nah Byron Scott is the best coach. He didn’t have a chance last season so now he has the perfect chance. He has MVP Kobe, Future Nash Clarkson, Magic Johnson D.Russell and Zach Randle! and future Kobe Nick Young.
Trust me it’s only preseason ! Lakers will be in the playoffs and be underdogs for the 2016 championships.

  • Just joined this site recently and I gotta say, as a lakers fan myself, that y’all are some of the most ficle, narrow minded fans ever. The warriors would do this to ANY team no matter who it was. We’re no different. I mean you got a bunch of rookies and sophomores going against the defending NBA champions. We’re young and inexperienced. Of course this was gonna happen sooner or later. WHAT DID Y’ALL EXPECT? They played like it was a regular season game. As for the season, I still believe we have a shot at the playoffs, tho a lot would have to go our way, like staying healthly.

  • I think the sad part about this season is, we’re not trying to tank on purpose this time. Man the Lakers D are PATHETIC.

We did a 50% or so lineup change and our D still suck and our players still can’t shoot or pass the ball. We have over-hyped players like Randle and D’Angelo.

Man I hope Kobe is healthy this season. Because it’s going to be another painful season.

  • I agree. But the point of frustration to me is the style of play being ran…there is no ball movement, no perimeter defense, no flow for a three point shot it’s too much ISO and ball watching
I agree you just CANT stop Steph but there are certain variables on the court that are inexcusable and I find it easy to blame on Scott bc of his big mouth saying he doesn’t like three point shot and being a defensive minded coach and all and putting an ATROCIOUS rotation for defense (HUERTAS, WILLIAMS, SWAGGY, KELLY, BASS)
It’s just baffling sometimes bc believe me we WILL be seeing this in the season I mean ffs he won’t even play BLACK OR NANCE who could’ve improved our D tonight.

  • You know, James Worthy can keep staring into the camera and say that B.Scott is a defensive minded coach, but so far, I’m not seeing it.

  • Just one of those nights. Warriors are the Warriors. They just won a title for a reason. They have nights like this even against really good teams. We have a long way to go to get to their level.

  • They arent banning through ips so stop lying you stupid rice eater.

  • I’m with you on that but I think Byron’s still experimenting with different rotations. I still think black’s gonna start at C with bass at PF. And I like Byron as a coach, but this Princeton offense needs to be trashed. Didn’t work with Mike brown and it didn’t work last year.

  • Minnesota??? NOOOOOOOO…………. We are worse than the Minnies??? HELPPPPPPPPPPP

  • Well THAT was a reality check. Reality is GS is really good, it was raining 3’s from those dudes. Other reality is we are a work in process. It is sad that we had to play THEM in our last preseason game as it does pretty much show us where we are at in comparision to the best team, but hopefully it will be a good learning tool and one day that will be us again. One thing though, was that Anthony Brown who came to life finally? A bright spot just when I was wondering about him. J Brown looked better too. Good news is Minn is not GS, if we open with a win we can put tonights thrashing behind us.

  • Let’s face reality – the Lakers will be a D-League quality team again this season. That’s just the way it is.

But I will say even the Warriors won’t shoot that well night after night. I mean Curry, Barnes, and Thompson were stroking it. Then their bench came in shooting with their eyes closed knocking down 3 after 3 too. LOL……….. Your right about our inexperience. That is why they will need Kobe and the other vets to lead the way. People like Kobe and MWP have been there and done that. They would not give up without a fight. And that would be contagious for the youngsters to feed off of.

Lets hope the Lakers get off to a good start early in the season while the schedule is a bit easy. That way they build a bit of confidence which as the Warriors showed can make the game a bit easier.

You put Nance Jr., Clarkson, Kobe in the game tonight and we are not searching for points and playing as bad on both sides of the ball.

We still most likely lose if we don’t tighten our defense but many of the transition 3’s would have not been there which would have changed the tempo and flow of the game considerably IMO.

Like the NYY and NYM theres no real rivalry between the LAL and LAC.

  • Yes you are right about that. Most 19 year olds are in bed by 10 pm. This guy was the second player taken in the draft and has to lead a team coming off a 21-61 season. Yet so many brainless folks expect the guy to come in running the team like Magic Johnson. And even Magic would have to adjust to playing on a team with no chemistry because of so many players who have never played together before trying to gel.

These are many of the same unrealistic fans who a week ago when the Lakers beat the Warriors were writing the Lakers into the championship round. I have tried to warn fans that you can’t get too high on the wins or too low on the loses. There will be growing pains and ups and downs.

Not to mention a new coach trying to get the players to buy into what he is selling as he trys to get the team all on the same page. None of it is going to be easy when you are playing in the Western Conference in the toughest league in the world.

  • Only time will tell. Right now, he’s far from nba-ready. Maybe we should be considering going like this:

    Clarkson / Huertas = Russel
    Bryant / Williams / Brown
    Brown / Young / MWP
Randle / Nance Jr = Bass
    Hibbert / Black / Sacre

  • Watched him all year at Ohio State. He’s just not being aggressive at all. He wasn’t asked to be a pg there so I think once he grasp he will need to-do more offensively we will see better play. It’s unfair to place much expectation on a 19 year old. He has not played enough NBA basketball yet.

  • But he looked good the other night. Russel should be limited to 15/20 minutes per game at least at the beginning of the season. We are taking on beatable teams for the first ten games or so. Those first ten games will quickly tell us what are our chances at making the playoffs.

  • I’d trade Sacre out and put Kelly in his place. But I do agree that Clarkson might be a bit more athletic and skilled overall than both Russell and Huertas at this point anyway. I think Huertas is the most natural point guard, but I would know what situations to use a player with a little more speed and athleticism.

I am also not sure Randle is quite ready to be turned lose because he is so gifted that at times he prefers to use too much athleticism with out giving a bit of balance of thought first to make things a bit easier for himself. That will obviously take him some time to get down. I’d hate to see him pick up another injury so soon in his career by not bringing him along at the proper speed.

  • Russel”s game reminds me of Andre Miller right now. Slick and crafty. Not much explosion but can get to his spots. I think Russell has much better vision but needs to learn how to command the floor. Russell is pressing under the pressure. Also keep in mind he’s learning the Princeton offense on the g lying when he’s more accustomed to pick and roll.

  • I’m not sure BS is senile or just a bad liar. Before the game he said all he wants from the last game of the season is to come out with no injury. So you’re down a gazillion points in the 4th, the only guy on your roster that cares about manning the paint is in there.

Seriously? Does he not understand that if Hibbert goes down he’s got a much worse scenario than last year. And it was pretty horrendous last year. Ed Davis was our 2nd center. This year it’s Black who moves up. And he’s still a turnstile.

  • Kelly just seemed to appear more confident as if he belonged out there. Nance Jr. and Jabari and Anthony Brown too. And of course all the veteran players are already proven. But there is no chemistry yet.

And that will take some time.

We have to bring the young guys mainly Russell and Randle along at the right pace. They should not be rushed into service IMO. I’m not saying they should or should not start because perhaps they should be given a shot at starting. But should they struggle and cost us too many games early I think that decision should be re considered.

I hate seeing the Lakers lose, i hate seeing them not make the playoffs and with all these injuries its just frustrates me so much!. • Lakers Projection: 35-40 wins.
BUT let’s NOT knee jerk about tonight’s loss. Let’s accept that Golden State are Champions and that it’s rare that ANY team will shoot 16 for 32 from the 3 point line, and that ANY team will have a 51% shooting average.<- At one point they were near 75% shooting from the 3 point line!

But tonight we got to see the rotations Scott will use.

We got to see that Russell plays best with the second squad despite his 12 points.

We got to see Abrown score 14 points, Kelly score 13, and Williams score 19.

We got to see that Black AND Sacre didn't play, and that BOTH Bass and Kelly played backup center.

We got to see Hibbert play less than a normal amount of minutes, grab 10 rebounds.

We got to see Randle , despite what we call a bad night, get 8 points and 6 rebounds. < over 30 minutes thats almost a double double.

So let's accept that this team is young. Let's accept that on some nights they will score 110, but on others they will stink. And let's accept that they are BARELY a .500 ballclub (41 wins).

The future is bright, but until Russell, Randle, Clarkson, ABrown, and Nance get a few years in the league, the Lakers Glory won't be as bright.

Do you think Lou Williams could be an effective starting point guard for the Lakers this season? Because I have concerns about how D’ Angelo Russell will progress. • Scotts system only uses the Princeton as the base.

There are about 5 levels deeper that have nothing to do with the Princeton.

  • Scotts system only uses the Princeton as the base.

There are about 5 levels deeper that have nothing to do with the Princeton.

If we’re going to generalize like you have, then let’s call the Spurs system the Triangle too. It shared enough of the base fundamentals that one could argue it’s the same……

“How” the players run around the court in circles and run the offensive progressions is Princeton. After that it runs through a layer of the triangle, a “probing” element of pick and roll, and a basic element of ISO. And, there is also a heavy emphasis on screens and pick-and-pop. So the “Princeton” stops after the basic notion of where guys run in the base set ends. The rest is a read-react offense based on matchups.

Calling Scott’s offense a Princeton is like calling a Lexus a Toyota.

So why so many knee jerk reactions to a blow out lose by the defending champs who shot the ball extremly well. This young team will have ups and downs, and prolly wont fully start to come around until all star break. I see them playing around .400 .450 ball until mid way then pick up to around 500 600 ball. Im still predicting 40 45 wins this year. Its going to be ugly some times and pretty some times, but its to be expected

If, as so many of my Twitter followers attest, that Upshaw is next Whiteside – apparently 29 other teams not sold that’s true – no claim

Sadly many of our fellow Lakers fans are so desperate they cling to any kind of hype.

  • When will you people stop making excuses for Byron Scott. Please tell me then, what has Byron done that impresses you so far? Come on.

  • Lakers badly needed a good coach. I dont know why they hire Byron Scott. He was FIRED by New Jersey, New Orleans & Cleveland. Will Lakers Fire him as well.

  • As long as the Lakers persist to play the Princeton offense, pain and suffering will remain.

  • It should have been Shaw, right after Phil “retired”. He had it all. The Laker pedigree, respect of the players, and the Guru’s assistant during a two-championship repeat.

Going with Mike Brown over Brian Shaw was a huge mistake.

  • Yes to patience, developing young players, reasonable expectation. BUT GOTTA BUILD WITH SOLID FOUNDATION! We DONT have one with BYRON SCOTT! Let’s rebuild with a better coach.

  • I get that it’s a preseason game. But that doesn’t mean we have to lay down like dogs on defense. A really bad sign heading into the regular season.

  • Same with Whiteside. The point is that there’s little downside in keeping him, and there’s a chance that he might have a high ceiling. Sacre is a human traffic cone on the court.

  • Give the Warriors some credit — they hit some really tough shots last night. But, then again, that’s why they’re defending champs

  • Disheartening but seriously how do you stop GS. They have too many 3 point shooters. And they seem to hit even if they are guarded. If I was defending I would give up too lol. Damn we need guys to produce like that!

  • To me, it just looked like the guys gave up. No effort to do the little things, like fight through screens, block out, run out on 3 point shots, heck, even talk on D. And then come down and look to jack up some long shot. If we get beat, even bad, so be it. Part of the process. But to look like you don’t want to give an effort, especially if you are trying to make the team, is inexcusable.

  • The last preseason game and this clown is still experimenting with the lineup. Brandon Bass at the 5 C’MON MAN. Hate to admit it but Wimpy Johnson told the truth, these guys have no idea whats going on. Look it’s ok if you’re getting beat by jumpshooters, but to get so thoroughly beaten on the inside is absolutely shameful. The only reason I can see Scott not changing that Bass-Kelly nightmare last night was to fool GS into thinking we were not really trying to win.

  • Can we be a 35 win team with only 1 effective center? We saw that Bass doesn’t exactly put fear in people when they go in the lane.

We’re in trouble as soon as Hibbert gets off the court. Even with his liability, Black might be the best defensively of the 3 options (Sacre,Bass)

  • Why not simply switch Nance Jr with Brown? Nance is more comfortable operating in the paint and Brown is known for his three-point shooting.

  • Sounds reasonable to me. I will switch them. I just point out players that I think can play in the NBA at a high level. Or the players that I think at least have a clue early in their NBA careers. Some players mature, learn, and pickup things faster. And some take more time to get comfortable with the IQ and speed of the game.

So I think those things should be considered. Not just throwing the top picked player in before others just because they are the top pick.
That top pick may end out being the great player you expected if he is slowly developed the right way. And that very same top pick can turn into a big disappointment if you try to force something out of him that he is not comfortable or ready and prepared to bring out of himself.

Thanks for your feedback ! What about Lou Williams playing point guard?

  • They have to make another cut. Jeez. The guys on the bubble played, as they should have. We need Kelly more than you might think so far, too.

  • Not likely but to be fair the Warriors play that way off experiences instinct as they’ve been together for quite a while now.

  • I totally agree with you. A top pick remains a rookie who needs time to develop. Russel only played one year in College before playing in the NBA. In other words, it took the kid only two years to go from high school to pro level. So let’s allow him at least two full seasons before starting assessing how good he really is. I can still hear those fans boo him/the team at the SL. Ridiculous.

Lou Williams playing the point? After watching Russel and Curry, I don’t mind when point guards turn into high volume shooters. But can a high volume shooting guard turn into a good playmaker? Kobe showed that a ball-dominant shooting guard could be a great facilitator but we’re talking about a player whose basketball IQ is outstanding. Not saying Lou Williams does not have basketball IQ. All in all, if Huertas proves to be too much of a liability on the defensive end and Clarkson is out due to injury, we won’t have much choice anyway…

  • he can handle it like Bargnani – stretch 5 but no D. Unfortunately a defensive presence in the middle is still required after hibbert comes out.

  • bywrong sounds about right. Hib did well on the boards, 10 reb in 24 minutes. Upshaw got 6 rebs in 12 minutes then got cut. Byron definitely set RU up to fail by putting him in to take on Lillard. Upshaw got sliced up. Then again Lillard did the same thing against Deandre Jordan. Damian is just ridiculously good but upshaw got blamed for “not doing” his job.

  • Good points. But because I am not totally sold on Russell, Huertas, or Clarkson even if healthy being able to effectively run the point night after night I think you prepare yourselves long before you have no other choice. It would lighten our young players loads before our hands are forced to do so. Confidence is a delicate emotion. We want the young players to be confident that the team has faith in them but show it in a supportive way to insure they have the support in place thus not feel too much pressure to carry the largest load.

Unfortunately our young players are playing on a storied franchise in one of the largest media markets in the NBA. They will catch all kinds of un necessary heat and pressure from the Laker hating media should they struggle too much and that is more likely than not. Especially against playoff bound Western Conference teams.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and perspectives.
Let me know what you think about what I have just share.

  • To be fair, no one expected the guys to beat the champs. But they do except them to play at least decent NBA bb. The worst part, they still play like a group of individuals. Just like last season. Byron is the cause of it all.

  • there’s no argument here. I agree with you, partially. BS can consider Kelly as a 5 but it’ll be to score points and not defend the paint , is all. Just like Barganani.

Bottom line, after Hibbert the team dead is in the water defensively, this year and likely in the future because “upside” gets cut.

  • True. And so was firing Mike Brown with the idea of bringing in Steve Nash and Dwight Howard to try to turn the Lakers into the Phoenix Suns. As putting D-12 as a priority before Pau Gasol and having Pau take a back seat to a player with no offensive moves was just plain foolish. Those decisions led us to the 4 year set back and a waste of Kobe’s high level playing years.

  • I think they are out of time for this year, though. They spent all the learning time the “Princeton” requires on conditioning. I don’t know how to run any offense if nobody on the team can set a pick, though. I am sure that was one reason they sent Upshaw down.
I know that GSW can make anybody look bad but I don’t see guys like Russell understanding “what time it is” for him as a young player and Scott doesn’t seem good at getting Russell or anybody else through the learning curve. His only virtue as a coach seems to be that he is tough enough to beat up young players. That is such a pitiful—and ineffective—qualification for a coach.
Meanwhile, Laker castoffs, Luke Walton, Steve Nash and Jerry West have GSW rolling again. No, these 3 guys aren’t solely responsible for the Warriors success, but they are 3 contributors who slipped through the Lakers’ fingers. What do we have? The last coach standing; the only available coach that hadn’t already turned the Lakers down. Not everybody wants to work for Jim Buss.

  • I’m not a big fan of Scott as a coach but I’ll be patient for now. Same patients for the young bucks. Our schedule is not as hard as it’s been the last two seasons. The first 15 games will say a lot about the state of the team and how Scott is managing them.

Byron Scott needs to stop playing into other teams strengths an play his best don’t worry about going small.
