Kevin Durant Addresses Lakers Rumors In 2016 NBA Free Agency
Kevin Durant Addresses Lakers Rumors In 2016 Nba Free Agency

Heading into the 2015-16 NBA season, Kevin Durant returns to the Oklahoma City Thunder after suffering a season-ending injury. While Durant’s focus will be on winning a championship, he will be surrounded with questions regarding his upcoming free agency.

During training camp, Durant addressed a report about the Los Angeles Lakers being his main destination if he leaves the Thunder. When asked about the report, Durant said the following to Anthony Slater of The Oklahoman:

While the Lakers will have ample cap space to pursue free agents like Durant, they are still in the early stages of their rebuild. Although D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson make up a nice young core, their progression throughout this season will be a factor for free agents.

Although Durant will be the top free agent, Al Horford, Mike Conley and DeMar DeRozan are some of the players who are expected to hit free agency in 2016. However, the focus for the Lakers this season is competing for a playoff spot in Kobe Bryant’s 20th season.

  1. SMITH WOULD do any thing to make up a story and to help his self,. AS FOR DURANT he has nothing to lose by telling the truth or even not saying anything at all. Because it is no ones BUSINESS but his own.

        1. you would know what its like to dream huh lol you clipper fans been dreaming of winning a championship since day one..but i bet your a bandwagon..use to be a laker fan and switch since clippers got chris paul. its cool bro we dont need you as a laker fan. Just keep fueling our fire. Remember the skies are purple in LA

        2. in 3 years the table will be turned haha its pretty funny, but i guess you have to talk crap while you can

        3. 3 years? So Jim Buss will resign by then, right? lol We play for #Rings #only

        4. that’s the funniest hashtag ever by a Clippers fan lmao, since when man? hahaha

        5. only one player on the lakers has ever won a playoff game in a lakers uniform. and it’s been 4 years

        6. Wrong. Metta is on the team too. He helped us get ANOTHER ring. Thats two just in case you need help counting

        7. So does being up 3-0 with a 20 point lead in the 4th qtr of the Nba playoffs, and choking away the best chance of going to the Western Conference finals for the 1st time EVER. The Chokers will always be the 5th best basketball franchise in California, they’ll never run LA and they proved it.

      1. Just like Aldridge was going to sign with the Lakers! I’ll believe it when I see I see it! Jim hasn’t signed 1 big time free agent since coming to power. I hope he will , but these articles hurt more than help.

        1. I agree. it just shows the lakers getting dissed over and over by every single player they want

        2. these so called Clipper fans of the past 3 years. Stop choking games away first (in the playoffs I might add), and then maybe you guys can talk shit, tsk tsk.

    1. Well he does have something to lose if he didn’t deny the rumors, the respect and support of the Okc fan base, not to mention management. If he didn’t come out and deny them, he would be shipped off to Whatever team could offer the most by the deadline. If it’s his intent to see if given a healthy year they can get back to the finals, and if not he’s considering la. Who knows? No one knows but his inner circle but things get leaked all the time. On the other hand, things get made up all the time. Who knows, but he has to deny the rumours regardless

      1. Durant isn’t going to make any sort of “decision” until after he sees how well his team (and future) in OKC will do this year.

So, until June, there is no “flavor” or predictor to give any insight to his decision.

We can say that LA offers the greatest financial incentive. Washington offers the greatest “sentimental” incentive. OKC offers the greatest “loyalty” incentive.

And, we can say that in this modern era, that EVERY free agent explores and listens to ALL options — which is the smart business method.

This is all we know and will know until June as Durant can’t make a smart “business decision” regarding his future, $100+ million salary, $100+M in endorsements, his brand and legacy until the end of the season when all the moving pieces settle.

I can say, however, that LA offers the greatest financial incentive — which shouldn’t be discounted — and *if* he can win a championship in LA, he would cement his status as best player in the league (and world).

    1. Ha Ha Ha! there you have it faker fans. Prepare for shitty play for the next decade. LOL

      1. As a long time Lakers fan I must admit, this digital free agent thirst game is utterly embarrassing !!

  2. lol wow you’d believe the media before a player smh thats sad..id love too have him but the media and gullible people like you, are making him angry..

  3. The thing is too Durant simply cannot say this is true it would cause way too much drama for his team who are capable of making playoffs and going places, possibly nba finals, unlikely but possible. But the fact he is even acknowledging the media about this makes me think this is a huge possibility it depends on a number of factors IMO as well,

#1 OKC has to either miss playoffs again or do really bad in playoffs.

#2 Russel, or Clarkson has to really shine and so promise/potential. Clarkson we know has potential and he works hard. Russel is the type of player that will shine with better talent around him. He is easily capable of being a 10pt/10assist guy his rookie year. He also will never shoot as much as Russel Westbrook does. If your durant you don’t need a good scoring PG you need a really good passing pg and russel is just that. We saw his vision in SL and it was off the charts, some passes were instant career highlight pass material. Clarkson shining this year would be averaging between 15-20ppg.

#3 Julius Randle having a really good year this year average between 15-20pts and getting 10-15 rebounds per game would be good.

#4 Kobe staying healthy and meshing well with the current team, If kobe leads the league in scoring for the first few months of the season and has the worst feild goal % of his career again this year this could definitely hurt our chances of landing Kevin Durant. Kobe really needs to show/prove at this stage of his career he is ready to be a catch and shoot type player does not have to handle the ball every possession or bring it up the court 66% of the time. Hes never had a true point guard on his team like russel he had gary payton for one year, but he was old at 35 years old but kobe only took 18 shots per game that year a very low number compared to other years with no point guards, example with smush parker he averaged 27 shots per game.

So if kobe can keep his shots between 15-20 a game and not need to have the ball in his hands all the time and let/trust russel to do the work(As long as he proves capable – Look at his passes in summer league now imagine he making those passes to a guy like hibbert, kobe, lou, artest, nick young, clarkson, randle, etc. I think we have a huge/solid chance of landing durant.

Also Clarkson has to average between 15-20ppg this year for lakers to be
successful same with randle he needs atleast 15ppg and I expect atleast
20-25ppg from kobe. 10-15 from hibbert, 10-15 from lou williams, 8-10 from artest, 10-15 from nick young. and 10-12 for russel.

The other thing to keep in mind even if for some odd reason Kevin Durant is already set on coming to lakers this offseason he simply cannot tell anyone it is true.

  4. As always, the media makes a big deal out of a small rumor. Key word in this is ‘IF’ being if Durant decides to leave OKC. Then he’d have interest more than one team not just LA, NY etc.

  5. I don’t think he would either. Durants friends may not talk to Stephen A. But I’m sure the people at Roc Nation.

  6. Smith is a hardcore Knicks fan. Anything he can do to taint the Lakers image and ruin our chances of landing Durant, he will do. Durant is probably tired of all these LA rumors. It’s making the fanbase look thirsty and the Lakers organization too over confident. Smith claims in his 19 years of looking over and reporting for the NBA, he can see likely outcomes and whatnot. He said he heard from a source that LA IS the spot after OKC. All those years and he can’t decipher a bs rumor like this? Any sensible Lakers fan knows this isn’t even close to true. Either Smith is really stupid, or he has another agenda.

  • So he didnt deny that he wouldnt consider LA. However, there are rumors that Durant does indeed talk to Smith, so who’s telling the truth?

I don’t think Smith would make this up. I think naturally Durant has to deny as instructed by his camp.

    1. SMITH WOULD do any thing to make up a story and to help his self,. AS FOR DURANT he has nothing to lose by telling the truth or even not saying anything at all. Because it is no ones BUSINESS but his own.

          3. How about, Clippers run Houston out of the playoffs, oh but wait…

          4. I think Durant would rather win a ring and have his jersey retired by the Lakers rather than a selfie portrait and losing in the playoffs!! It’s not fun playing for a team in Los Angeles and getting booed at the Dodgers games?

      1. Well he does have something to lose if he didn’t deny the rumors, the respect and support of the Okc fan base, not to mention management. 4. Randle
      5. Hibbert
      Bench
      1. Clarkson
      2. Williams
      3. Young/Artest
      4. Bass/Artest
      5. Black/Upshaw

That seems like a really good team on paper.

          1. Are you on crack again josh?

Put down that pipe and put that straight jacket back on.

          2. im trying to find out if your an okc fan or a lakers fan..its hard to tell lol

          3. Whos asking….numb1 or josh?

I’m trying to find out if your a sane person or a loony, its hard to tell lol

          4. he knows who i am he just feels embarrased that i called him an okc fan..he didnt deny it either

          5. I didnt want to waste my time on you, but since your pushing the subject, mr know it all, i will tell you.

I have NEVER been an OKC fan.
If I was an OKC fan, I wouldnt give a damn what anyone cares.
            I am a DURANT fan.
I also think Westbrook is a talented player.

DONT EVER QUESTION MY LOYALTY TO GET A RISE OUT OF ME, THATS A NO NO.

          6. theres no questioning you just proved your an okc fan..please change your name to okc lifer

          7. read his comments he said he watches okc games…probably has an okc hat with a kevin durant shrine in his room

          8. So we can’t pick up a great player because he comes from another team??

What the heck are you smoking today dude.

    1. Even I knew the report was BS. First it came from ESPN, second it came from someone who works at ESPN and 3rd, Durant said if it didn’t come from him directly or 2 people closely associated with him directly that it’s merely rumors that people are flying out there. I shook my head when I read it. Only Durant and his 2 guys know what Durant wants to do and none of those 3 are going to talk to a whack job like Smith. Just another ESPN guy like Broussard who’s trying to stay relevant despite being totally irrelevant. Broussard is the worst of them all though.

            So, no Kareem

            no Gasol,
            etc.

        1. I know that. But the fact that Durant is denying that he talks to Smith, which is contrary to what other rumors say, is suspect.

  • No shit he’d deny the rumor. None of these rumors matter until the offseason comes around. Of course LA will be an option for him, but why would he go out of his way to address these dumb rumors. If OKC doesn’t do well this year (they will) then the door is WIDE OPEN for his services.

I just think KD and Westbrook are going to have to carry the load like usual for that team, and it’s predictable. Their defense will be highly questionable in the middle (Kanter sucks) and I don’t know if they have the depth worthy enough to help.

    1. “No shit he’d deny the rumor”
It’s more than denying when he called Smith a liar; he just flat said it’s not true. KD my opinion no chance BUT Westbrook has a much higher percentage of landing here than him.

      1. Let’s wait until the seasons over before we render KD unlikely. We need a SF for the future. Not another combo guard. I love Westbrook’s tenacity, but we already have a backcourt of the future (at least for now, I still need to see how Clarkson will play this year). No need to spend more money on a strong position.

But they’d offer Westbrook a handsome ransom if they could so whatever.

      2. HUH?
Before russell, the likelihood of Westbrook landing in LA was high. He’s from Long Beach, went to UCLA, and is an LA Kat.

But, the “westbrook free agency tour” is still 2 seasons away. And, after the Durant Free Agency Tour next year….

        1. The Lakers would not do that deal, Westbrook’s body won’t last, D’Angelo’s D’Angelo’s potential upside is much higher.

  • I’ll wait at the end of the season. Right now, I am excited with the current Lakers roster going forward. I am eager to see the tandem of Russell and Clarkson and a bounce back season of both Randle and Kobe. There’s a lot to be excited about other than the possibility of signing Kevin Durant.

Media likes to focus on that superstar free agency stuff. But, as a LA native and Laker fan, its been a long time coming, three awful seasons. So this is how it feels to root for a team this bad? There are teams who have been rebuilding for more than 3 years, some 10 seasons without post season. But, when the Lakers are down, it is magnified x10…no wonder they are the most hated team in the NBA according to an article I read.

    1. Free agency is a fool’s gold. In NBA history, only 2 big-time FA left their teams in their prime — Shaq and Lebron…..the others stayed where they were or only moved on when their window was starting to close (i.e. Lamarcus Aldridge).

Yep, it would be GREAT to land Durant, but not gonna hold my breath..more interested in seeing the 19-year-old PG, 20-year-old PF, and 22-year-old SG develop into a nucleus for the next decade.

          1. Yes but he indirectly caused his trade. in other words Kareem planned his trade.

      1. Free agency is a lot different today than years past. There’s a pretty good chance Durant will leave OKC. You don’t even know if he’ll like playing for the new coach Billy Donovan. He’s at the age in the league where these guys do contemplate having a fresh start

      2. The new CBA will change a lot.

With $92M it creates a situation where the league pushes toward 4-superstars will create a championship team.

And, given the cap situation and overall situation in OKC, it’s very likely that Durant and Westbrook aren’t enough to make the final round, and OKC has little money to help. And, while Durant and Westbrook are formidable, they are 2 superstars, and Cleveland with 3 superstars should beat them.

        1. Max deals will also increase with the salary cap, so teams won’t be able to afford a 4th superstar unless they’re willing to take a luxury tax hit.

        1. He demanded a trade….threatened to sign with the ABA if Milwaukee didn’t give him one.

EDIT: Lebron was actually a trade too, but it was spurred on by his impending FA. In Kareem’s era there was FA to speak of so he had to use the ABA as his leverage.

          1. Yes but he indirectly caused his trade. In other words Kareem planned his trade.

  • Stephen A. was the first guy who reported LeBron was going to Miami in 2010. He never said he spoke to KD about this. He’s just quoting a source that might’ve heard something.

    1. Bingo! I read the quotes, he simply said he HEARD from a SOURCE that this is what Durant was thinking. Now Durant is out here saying he never told Smith, that Smith is making shit up. Seems like Durant got things mixed up with exactly what was said.

    2. Durant said it really clear about 3 weeks ago….
“There are 3 people in my inner circle. All of which have been told to say nothing about the upcoming free agency. I won’t know about free agency until June.”

      Until June,
No one can make any prediction.

I can say, that if the 3 young guys tak steps forward, and given the financial incentive to be in LA, that Durant will listen to a proposal and consider LA.

  • My fear is that these types of rumors, because they cause unneeded drama whether true or not, might actually deter KD from coming to LA… Or maybe that was the source’s plan all along…

  • With all due respect to Durant, we don’t need him or any big name free agent. All we need is patience and a bit of luck that our young hopefuls stay healthy.

Contrary to popular belief, the Lakers have always built championship teams via drafts and trades. It’s the only way to grow a dynasty.

We have in D’angelo a potential greatest point guard in NBA history and a powerful supporting cast of potential all stars with veterans to train them which includes the black momba.

Let us give them the time and patience to grow, and enjoy their journey without this extra pressure, which only serves to give the jealous laker haters fuel to fan the fires.

    1. WHAT?
There isn’t a team in the League that isn’t improved by the addition of Kevin Durant.

Let’s not be foolish and think that EVERY GM hasn’t thought about how to add Durant to their roster.

  • Stephen A Smith didn’t say DURANT told him, or a friend of Durant told him. He just said “I heard”. That’s pretty vague, and could have come from anyone.

So if Durant is saying Stephen A is a liar for saying Durant or someone in the Durant camp told Stephen A this, then this is much ado about nothing.

  • History Facts…..In the Long history of the Lakers their Great Players have not come by way of FA’s……It has been through the Draft or Trades….Fact….So they are right on schedule.

    1. The new CBA invalidates any sort of “history.”

      And,
Let’s say Durant chooses LA. It’s smarter for him to push for a “sign and trade” to get the 5th year. So technically if he does come to LA, it would be via trade. There is a tiny chance he could be traded at the deadline, but to me, that’s so unthinkable that it’s nothing more than a way for the media to sell more ads.

          1. no its not.

The new collective bargaining agreement that emerged in December 2011 after a 161 day lockout changed a number of rules on how sign and trades work.

Here’s a summary of the new rules:

Sign and trade contracts are reduced to a maximum of 4 years, with 4.5% percent raises. These are the years and raises used for non-bird players. In the past CBA, you could give the player maximum raises for maximum years if you had their bird rights, which would be 7.5% raises over 5 years in the current CBA.

I believe Shaq was the exception.

  • Whether we have a legitimate shot at Durant or simply get the obligatory meeting (we will, because it’s the Lakers) will depend on the growth of our youth this season. If Russell and Randle develop quickly and look to be all stars in the near future, and Clarkson proves that his rookie season wasn’t a fluke I have to think we’ll have a real shot at signing him. We should all be rooting against the Thunder this year, because if they win it all he’s not leaving. If our young guys show something great by the end of the season, combined with the ability to sign two max players make the Lakers an extremely attractive destination next summer.

    1. Smith got dissed sure. While he did say that unless it comes directly from him or his 2 representatives then it’s only rumor, he didn’t exactly deny the situation or say he wouldn’t ever consider playing for the Lakers much less leave OKC either. He just simply addressed the source of the rumor. I don’t think it takes a genius to figure out that since it’s from ESPN, 99.5% of the time it’s going to be a lie, especially from Smith or Broussard.

  • I mean damn what is he suppose to say? “Stephen is absolutely correct and I am taking my talents to Southern California” LOL. If he wanted to stay a thundercat then he would’ve already signed a major extension but no he’s waiting. If okc wins the championship then he’s probably not leaving BUT if they lose once again in the playoffs then he WILL exercise his options. If Russ, Randle, clarkson all ball out and Lou and Bass play above average with a faster rejuvenated shot blocking hibbert who will only focus on D and rebounding and we win 45 games and sneak in the playoffs? Then I think we’ll be the favorites. I’m pretty sure KD wants to go to a team where he’ll be the man and grow with a bunch of young guys who will take him into retirement. If I was KD I would most def go to LA next year, Russ will be a much better passer than Westbrook

Just keep fueling our fire. Remember the skies are purple in LA

  • smiths response to kd

Regarding @KDTrey5 and his negative comments about me, let me say this: At NO time did I ever say I SPOKE to K.D. Or his family. Or his brother, friends, teammates, etc. (although I can assure you all I have on several occasions in the past). I said I HEARD from folks I know — in a league I’ve been covering for 19 years — that if he were to leave OKC as a free agent, these are the cities I was told he was considering. OKC. LA. Miami. DC. NY. I stand by it all. And that is that.
His assertion that I was lying is not only FALSE, but totally uncalled for. Especially from a player who receives nothing but praise not only from me, but from practically every media member you can find. Yet, for some reason, we’re all the same folks who don’t know *&%$ about the game of basketball. Whose thoughts he could give a &^%$ about. Essentially, individuals he wishes he’d never have to talk to…..that he’s being forced to tolerate…..as if someone has done something to him…..OF ALL PEOPLE!
Don’t know what has happened to Mr. Durant over the years. But I know this much: We all win with his return, because he is an absolute superstar. The NBA is better with him. We’re all at a loss without him.
It just appears that @KDTrey5 needs to learn something about today’s world in professional sports:
We don’t have to talk TO HIM to talk ABOUT HIM!
Folks like ME will still be here. Watching! Listening! Waiting! Reporting!
Whether he likes it or not. While he’s here and long after he’s gone.
Time to get use to it.

    1. “that if he were to leave OKC as a free agent, these are the cities I was told he was considering. OKC. LA. Miami. DC. NY. I stand by it all. And that is that.

This part is a little different than what I’ve read in an earlier article where Stephen A. mentioned L.A. as the city he would prefer to go not one of the cities which is very different.
Is Stephen A. picking and mincing words to defend himself? He also needs to understand KD does not know where his source is coming from and saying that he lied is his own right to defend his own position; after all who would know better than Durant what is said and what not about his own future.

        1. Having 19 years experience have zero to do with it; if he lied which KD said so then he lied. He doesn’t deserve more or less respect from Durant who was trying to preserve his own privacy for lack for a better word.

          1. Not just privacy dummy, Durant is a very low key guy he doesn’t like the media attention

          2. my point is a 19 year espn vet thats been around the nba and college seen would not lie. its a ton more likely kd is lieing then it is smith is

          3. That’s naive to believe someone with 19 years experience in the media can’t lie; they definitely can. Anyways someone probably read that quote to KD out of context so he responded with that choice of word BUT you would be more wise to believe Durant than Smith because he unequivocally said the rumor is false.

          4. His arrogance is mind blowing. Everything he says is correct, true or not its right to him. So hes gonna do everything in his power to save his credibility including lie/tweak the truth etc.

          5. hes been around the nba and its players for 19 seasons hes great friends with a ton of its players. do you honestly believe hes lying .

that would kill his relationships with the players he talks to

          6. Absolutely i wouldnt put lying past him. A big example, he said the N word on live tv clearly, he tries to cover his ass and say he didnt say that, his excuse was “Im from New York i talk fast”… He lied on camera to our faces when we clearly heard him say it. He took his punishment and moved on, of course other reporters f up too, the fact of the matter is he lied.

          7. that kind of lying i will agree he will do. but he wont put out flase reports to the media about mega star players like that because it could and would make them hate him which would kill his chances in the future to be an in the know person.

smith has been alot more accurate then chris brusard over the years

          8. no its not. lying about himself is one thing lying about a superstar athleat that pays your bills is a whle other thing

          9. Its still a lie in both scenarios, Athletes dont pay his bills, creating headlines drawing attention pays his bills(good or bad). Did you actually read his response that you posted… “It just appears that @KDTrey5 needs to learn something about today’s world in professional sports:

  • Can you imagining if the Lakers go after three more young players. We would run circles around Durant and the rest of the league. I really would like Durant to play for the Lakers. But I really love what Jimmy and Mitch just started. We are close to being the future of the NBA.

  • The only way he even gives the Lakers a shot at grabbing is if our young 3 (Clarkson, Russell, Randle) show extreme promise this season and we win 35+ games. A low 30 win season won’t be convincing. We’ll have the money to add some very nice pieces to go a long with this core and vet reserves.

  • So does being up 3-0 with a 20 point lead in the 4th qtr of the Nba playoffs, and choking away the best chance of going to the Western Conference finals for the 1st time EVER. The Chokers will always be the 5th best basketball franchise in California, they’ll never run LA and they proved it.
