On Monday, the Lakers officially waived veteran guard Jose Calderon after securing a buyout with the Spanish guard. The Lakers are going all in on evaluating their youth as the season draws to a close.
With several high level free agents and trade targets becoming available, the Lakers need to figure out what they have in their young core. The Lakers will continue to be linked to Paul George until the star swingman either signs an extension with Indiana or is dealt to another team.
The Lakers will also be linked to other star players on expiring contracts including the Bulls’ Jimmy Butler among others, especially if the team keeps their top-3 protected pick. With the Lakers cleaning house and bringing in Magic Johnson, it remains to be seen how patient the front office will be with the young core.
The next few months can drastically affect the steps the franchise makes this offseason and beyond.
