After sitting out the Los Angeles Lakers’ close loss to the Cavaliers on Sunday, D’Angelo Russell is on track to play in Tuesday’s game against the Charlotte Hornets. Russell has been in and out of the lineup over the past several weeks as he deals with a sore knee. His presence has been missed as the Lakers have lost 10 of their last 12.
Russell returned to action on December 11th after missing eleven games. He played in four games, but showed signs of rust, going 13-of-40 from the field with just 13 assists to 11 turnovers. The Lakers decided to rest Russell in the second of a back-to-back, something they could continue to do if the second-year guard continues to deal with knee issues.
Outside of Lou Williams, Russell has been by far the leading playmaker on the team. He was the main reason for the Lakers early season success, and the team has failed to replace his production. The Lakers are just three games back of the eighth seed in the West and have plenty of time to recoup their early season magic. Getting healthy is the first step toward righting the ship.
