Kobe Bryant ‘Progressing Well’ But Not Likely To Play Preseason

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix SunsKobe Bryant has already ‘shattered’ the recovery timetable for an Achilles tear. Most fans are looking forward to the moment The Mamba steps back on the court for the Lakers, but that time is still unknown.

Lakers spokesman, John Black, spoke to Mike Bresnahan of the L.A. Times and says that while Kobe is progressing, a return date is still not set:

He’s progressing well and has met all the targets and milestones of his rehab, and we expect him to make a full recovery. One of the key issues is to make sure he builds up strength and endurance not only in his Achilles but also in his legs, knees, back and core.

While there is no question that Bryant is progressing with his recovery, it is very likely that he will miss the entire eight-game preseason with the Lakers. Black also stated that the Lakers are not ready to set an exact return date for Kobe, saying:

“We’re going to avoid giving a target return date until he’s doing full weight-bearing running and on-court basketball activities, at the earliest,” Black said.

It is very important that Kobe and the Lakers’ staff take their time in getting Kobe back on the court. An Achilles tear is bad enough, but with it being someone at Kobe’s age, it makes it tougher to recover from. When he does return, it will probably be best for Kobe not to push it too much and maybe step back for other players to flourish.

Kobe will push himself to the limit in trying to get back on the court as soon as possible for the Lakers. There is nothing he won’t do to be ready for the season opener and when he does, the rest of the league better watch out.
