Lakers Nation Twitter LogoIn this day social media is a part of the fabric of nearly every person, business, or corporation in America. In the NBA, social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, and Vine serve as a way for teams and players to interact with their fans and give them an inside look at the happenings of their favorite players or teams regardless of where they are in the world.

Social media allows fans access that was unavailable before, and some teams are clearly more popular than others. At the top of that list, of course it’s the Los Angeles Lakers.

A study at Emory College concluded that the Los Angeles Lakers have the highest social media equity in the NBA.

The people at Emory collected all of the likes and follows from Twitter and Facebook, then created a model to account for market size, tweeting activity, and team performance over the last two years. When it was all said and done, the Lakers lead the pack in terms of both raw numbers, and in the model.

At the end of the day, this is a credit to all of you rabid, passionate Lakers fans and followers. No other fan base cares as much as you do and this finding is a testament to that. So congratulations to you, Lakers Nation.

The Heat and Celtics round out the top three, with the Charlotte Bobcats being the surprise of the list finishing fourth. The Clippers, however, show that your huge market doesn’t mean a huge following as they finished last in the NBA.
