Lakers News: LeBron James Thinks Luke Walton Handled 2018-19 NBA Season ‘As Good As You Can’ Through Major Injuries
Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

As the 2018-19 NBA season comes to an end, all of the attention has been on head coach Luke Walton’s future with the Los Angeles Lakers following his third season.

While Walton is not fully responsible for the Lakers missing the playoffs, president Jeanie Buss recently praised him but was noncommittal about his future.

With Buss deferring to president of basketball operations Magic Johnson on all basketball decisions, there is already a list of potential candidates if they make a change.

One major factor is likely LeBron James who was asked about how Walton has handled Year 1 in an exclusive interview with Allie Clifton of Spectrum SportsNet:

“As good as you could. As good as you can. No one expects for a suspension to happen on opening night. Nobody expects for injuries to happen the way they did with our franchise this year.”

James also brought up how the Lakers were 15-8 when he and the young core played together and that was simply not enough games for Walton to coach this team:

“It’s not enough for Luke to be able to know what he has on a consistent basis when you don’t have a consistent roster every single night throughout a full season. So like you said, control what you can control. You gotta play the hand that you’re dealt. He played the hand as well as he could.”

Although Walton has his shortcomings, roster construction and injuries completely derailed Year 1 with James and the young core. Unfortunately for Walton, head coaches are usually the scapegoats in these type of situations and it is no different for him.

If Walton ultimately does not remain the head coach, Jason Kidd, Mark Jackson, Tyronn Lue, and Juwan Howard have been mentioned. Out of this group, Lue won one championship in three consecutive NBA Finals appearances with James against the Golden State Warriors.
