Lakers News: Metta World Peace Says ‘Everybody’s Soft’ In Today’s NBA
Lakers News: Metta World Peace Says ‘everybody’s Soft’ In Today’s Nba
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

With three NBA preseason games in the books for the Los Angeles Lakers, all signs appear to be pointing to Metta World Peace locking up a roster spot. World Peace hasn’t completely turned back the clock to 2010, but he’s shown he can be valuable for head coach Byron Scott both on and off the basketball floor during the upcoming regular season.

Along with making headlines for jumping into the crowd for a loose ball and his mentoring efforts seemingly paying off for Julius Randle, World Peace also recently talked about the state of the NBA regarding toughness.

The veteran forward believes the NBA has gotten incredibly soft in recent years with things only getting worse in the category, via Eric Pincus of the Los Angeles Times:

“It’s no longer a man’s game,” he said. “It’s a baby’s game. There’s softies everywhere. Everybody’s soft. Nobody’s hard no more. So, you just deal with it, you adjust and that’s it.”

World Peace isn’t the only seasoned veteran to share the same sentiment about today’s NBA. Kobe Bryant famously called out his former teammate Dwight Howard for being “soft” during a game last year as a part of heated confrontation first game against one another since the ugly divorce in Los Angeles.

Former Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce also called out the majority of his old teammates from the Brooklyn Nets for being “a soft team” during his time there. Although Pierce isn’t a player Lakers fans would associate with toughness, hence the wheelchair incident in the 2008 NBA Finals, but he’s a part of a different generation with a drastically different mindset.

Few players in the NBA these days are considered physically and mentally tough on the basketball floor. Once players from Kobe and Metta’s generation walk away from the game, the league will never be the same.

As sn old head who’s been watching the game since the 710’s, I agree. As a student of the game, I disagree. Like the NFL, the rules of the game have evolved dictating less physical play. You have to adapt.

  • The game and the rules have to progress for the better. Unfortunately the mentality of players seems to be regressing not progressing.

To me its the sign of the times. Today people cry for everything. In other countries people are allot tougher and they don’t cry for depression or obesity, they might cry over hunger and constant loss of loved ones.

If a soft person like pierce is admitting the league is soft, you know it’s really soft.

  • Totally agree, the game is more finesse now than ever due to the rules and not the players and it’s making players who rely on their toughness rather than quickness less relevant especially one who is aging and borderline to make a roster like Metta. If this was the Pistons of the late 80s he’d make the roster easy IMO.

  • When the face of the league is Steph Curry, no question this is a baby’s game

  • why do you think the pacer brawl was against the pistons lol.
    coincidence?
ron was simply showing off for them.
back in the day they would punch each other in the face and the ref barely called a foul look up some old video footage youll find it.
bill lambeer was 1 of the worst though i dont like him at all.

  • Winning is important. The Lakers are so far removed from that that they should go in the Kobrick T-shirt business.

  • pencil us in at #8 seed.
ill be fine with last place!
as long as we make the playoffs bro

  • I like are team this year but we sorely lack consistent shooting. I doubt we will make the playoffs. Lakers have improved their defense immensely but they lack knock down 3 point shooters or consistent shooters in general.

  • Wait till our PGs return and actually set people up for open shots then you can comment on whether we lack shooters. Plus the season hasnt started and trades are still possible.

  • Big part of it comes down to the style of play today IMO, which doesn’t rely on the more physical bigs inside. It’s an offensive happy league given the rules and categorized fouls of today (tech 1’s vs 2’s). Likely making players think twice before deciding to physically challenge a play.

  • But we are not talking just about the physicality but also the mental toughness.

  • Completely agree with Metta. Soft is the word, without a doubt. It’s all about touchy- feely basketball nowadays. And shoot the 3 ball and hope it goes in! The days of Shaq, Malone, Barkley, etc. are GONE. The NBA has seen to it the physical play has disappeared. They might as well put on tu-tus and look like ballerinas out there in wimpville!!!! LMAO!!!

  • That’s part of it too, when players try to sell a foul like world football = over dramatize fouls = flopping and refs buy into the propaganda it definitely affects a game. Although they’ve done a pretty decent job of minimizing those type of calls players will do whatever to put points up on the board even it it relates to flopping.

It may come down to how this generation (Millenial’s) which mostly represented the league today have been raised since youth. Parents have pampered Millennial’s since youth thus they seek for reward/recognition for their work if if it’s basic work (paid to do). Millenial’s also have trouble taking constructive criticism as we can see from today’s times aside of certain weak minded players.

Sense of entitlement is also big with Millenial’s even when they a mediocre type of work effort they expect to be rewarded handsomely. Make’s sense with many mediocre players get large contracts in today’s league. Society also rewards stupidity too, look at the Kardashian’s and Jersey Shore , more people know about them than what’s going on in their own back yard.

Smack a kid in the ass and it’s possible you’d get prison time, the generations too sensitized.

Game recognize game! Bitch ass motherfuckers

  • I am super petty but posting that picture of Metta with Dwight is pathetic. I want a job at LN if Ryan Ward is still employed with all the crap he passes off as journalism.

  • Its because these guys have known each-other since childhood. They have been friends and playing on teams together their whole lives and so they view each-other as friends not enemies, even on the court. Previous generations knew how to seperate the two. Plus the new generations are just soft period. The Drake generation.

  • I’m starting to become concerned about the PG position. The main starting 4 (Hibbert, Randle, Kobe, Clarkson) are starting to mesh well with each other, but we have yet to have one of our main guys in Russell really play with them. I get that he’s hurt, but throwing him in the starting lineup without much play with those 4 guys maybe a little shaky.

Also, Huertas I believe everyone assumes will be the backup PG, but he too has yet to even see the floor. I’d hate for him to be thrown in the regular season without even a preseason game on the floor.

  • the new game and rules are making the high school and college players tailor their game towards a finesse(softy) game vs a tougher game. and metta is talking about The Center and POWER forward positions more so than anything else. those were the tough guys. sure you had a few tough SF’s. but for the most part the tough guys were Bigs. these types dont exist anymore. thats due to the rule changes and guys seeing every big man face up and get a lot of praise for it. so they want to do it too. so thats how you grow up even though you’re 6’10+ you now want to play like a SF. i grew up watching magic, stockton, jordan, drexler, kemp, barkley, drob, ewing, shaq, hakeem. then kobe, vince, tmac,ai, etc. these guys are not soft at all. all of them will destroy you in the paint but most of them can score from distance too. guys now can only score facing up from a distance or on a lob play. but due to the rules it helps softer guys score more often. you cant guard anyone now due to more ticky tac fouls called. so the game LOOKS better to the eyes in that regard. But in reality the players may not be better offensively in comparison to the old guys. since those old guys had to go up against a much tougher defense

  • @ThisOneLakersFan:disqus

that pistons pacers brawl was not ron’s fault. the pacers were giving it to the pistons. the pistons couldnt stop them from scoring even with their tough defense. yet the pacers shut the pistons down. the pistons were MAD that the pacers were toying with their top notch defense like that. it was clear no brawl that pacer team would’ve been in the finals. big ben got mad because ron would not let him dunk. he gave him a hard foul. not to hack him but to let him know” you will take this a… whoopin tonight. there will be no dunks or celebratory moments to get your team going. got o the ft line and clank 1 of 2.”

  • Not sure the young core spending time, learning life’s lesson from a dude who checked out on his team mates and had a mental break down in the playoffs. Sure, Hib has some good things to learn from, but he’s not really ideal as a mentor.

Besides, what about the on court stuff. What can he do to help them there, since the floor is where they will need to produce. Hib knowing the floor intimately isn’t a help.

  • Its called taking a charge or trying to get a offensive foul on his opponent which is showing you willing to throw you body in the way to get your team an extra possession. That’s playing great defensive IMO.

  • Is Hibbert saying the Lakers may have a Bunch of Late Bloomers?…..Well….The Hour is getting Late….. and Patience is out the Gate……Hibbert must have a Concussion from all that Falling on the Court.

  • I really like Hibbert. He’s doing what he was asked to do. And even though he’s on an expiring contract, he has completely bought into the TEAM. He defends these other guys on the court. He defends them in the media. He hangs with them. He helps them. He talks to them on the court. And he goes about his job with gusto, staying within his game and never complaining that the defense is so porous that it makes his job ten times harder.

This is a good guy to have on your team.

  • I want to say how much I appreciate the few people here who are actually discussing basketball and have substantive comments to make.

The earlier comments by Truth B Told, J B Rooker, and especially Bpowell1 are not basketball posts and have no content beyond gratuitous insults. So easy to throw stones from the peanut gallery. It’s a sign of a weak or immature mind. Those who insult others in order to feel or portray themselves as superior or important are trying desperately to prove to themselves that they are not the failures they secretly believe themselves to be. Here, that kind of person does it by insulting the 450 most successful basketball players in the world, as well as those who discuss basketball in these comment sections.

It’s sad the number of people who do that, here. I think there are a lot of insecure people out there.

  • so you are accusing some one of moneyt hey do not have how dumb Iworkfor my allowance fool!

  • Exactly the thing to do is get defensive players around him to make his job easier which is something I really question about the FO getting nothing but offensive players the past 3 years which is unbelievable. It takes defense to win games and lots of times defense gets you them hard wins.

  • Patient…….. Boy we’ve worn that word out already and it only been 11 games. The Fans can take the losing. I think we figured out that we’re not going to win to many games. What the fans want to see is improvement from the young core. Clarkson had been the most consistent. But Randle has taken a few steps back. We’re still waiting for Russell to take a step. Nance Jr has been good as well. Be Patient? Like we have a choice. Showing some improvement would go a long way to getting the fans to be patient.

  • Child, hush now. Rather than spout off with every meaningless thought that comes into your mind, why don’t you take some time and think about a particular basketball subject, then post a substantive comment on the sport. We would respect that a lot more than what you’re doing now. And you might find that you have something important to say, after all. Use your filters. You don’t have to post every fool thought that comes into your head. Sometimes deciding not to post something does more good and gets you more respect.

And if you feel you absolutely must insult someone, I will tell you that it has much more impact if you use proper sentences. Rather than say, “if some people are imkmature why harp on it that immature you are mrs. dana!” you might try something like, “So what if some people are immature? Why harp on that? All that does is show how immature you, yourself, are, Mrs. Dana!” See? Better.

  • I feel like we hear this post every week, “Roy Hibbert praises young core, just needs time” type of article. We have patience and we get it LN, stop recycling articles.

  • Yeah – Dana is correct about you / all you got to offer are insults. By the way, where did ClosedCasket say in his comment that Roy is delirious?

  • MWP is playing pretty good defense. And you can see the others trying. Heck even Nick Young is trying to take charges, lately. If they all put in the effort and learn when to switch and when to get back, then they won’t need a bunch of super talented defenders. Team defense works wonders if done well.

Of course, you always need one guard or wing player who can disrupt the flow of the opponent’s offense, so you’re right that the Lakers need a defensive specialist. I just don’t think they all need to be talented defenders. They just need to put in the effort consistently and *learn* good team defense. For instance, if they could learn a proper PnR defense on a fast guard — e.g., that when you’re guarding the PG and your teammate steps around the pick to block the PG’s path, you’re supposed to follow him over the pick, not sag off him and go under it, which is something all Lakers guards are getting wrong — they might develop a very effective defense without having super talent at it.

  • By the way, btpowell1, Badazztj12 made a substantive basketball post. Try doing that. It’s much more interesting than reading your insults.

  • That’s the thing that takes a lot of time and most of the time it isn’t in a person forte to play with any effort on defense(Russell). One bad defensive player F’s up your whole team defense because your forcing one your teammates to leave his man to rotate towards your assignment leaving that man open and any offense will see that and destroy a defense by doing that. I feel teams are taking advantage of Russell, Clarkson and Kobe defense because they know they will leave at least leave someone open every time and 9/10 they will make their shot depending on the player.

  • That’s when their teammates have to rotate over to the open man. You’re right, they are leaving a lot of people open, particularly in the corners.

  • he can help by not posting up and missing 3ft shots…
but seriously the kids need to play 30min each and be allowed to make and learn from mistakes without fear that BS will sub them out..we had a whole preseason and are 11 games in yet Scott says he still doesn’t know his rotation ??? GTFO…

  • The problem may be a coaching scheme one coupled with players being undisciplined as they are often caught ball watching on the opposite side. Through 11 games Scott has not addressed this it seems and it happens more often than not no matter who’s on the court. It was also a major problem last season. The constant switching VS fighting through screen’s leads me to believe it may be a scheme problem.

  • I have plenty of patience for the 3 youngins and Nance as well. It’s Bass and Williams and even Nick’s shooting drought that I have no patience for.

  • Hibbert just seems to be a solid dude, first and foremost. I really hope he sticks around.

  • There is more to his finals problems that team got f up after they traded for Evan turner. Also there were reports that one of his teammates was banging his wife.

  • Patients? If they are good they are good if they suck they suck and right now they suck. It takes a lot of variation of players to get a good combination of players to play well. If it were that easy many teams would have great success already. Now it just our turn to have bad luck, bad combination, bad coach and bad management. Perhaps next year team will be better or the year after that hehehe….

  • not sure why Turner would screw that team up more than someone banging your center’s S.O. Which by the way was debunked by Paul George. Also the gossip website that printed didn’t care if it was true or not.

“The website acknowledged it cannot confirm the accuracy of the story,

  • That team was way ahead of everybody then they picked up turner and the team chemistry went out the window. Sometimes adding a player to certain dynamic can kill the team.

  • Agree, patience is needed but it’s no excuse to losing winnable games/showing a 2-9 record. Even the Wolves who play with more youth (tho more experienced) are 5-7. It comes down to players knowing their roles, team play and hustle on both ends of the floor. Factors this Lakers team has failed to show on a consistent basis thus far = lack of leadership.

  • we should resign him Dana.
this is the kind of guy we need on the team.
we need to drop Sacre already he does nothing good.

  • Sometimes adding a player who is an insurance for the resident wacko can throw the chemistry off balance. Doesn’t take much to set Lance off. Both dudes didn’t come back but Hibb wasn’t right in the head that following year.

  • YES!!! 🙂
    its about time!
i just dont see him contributing anywhere.
Kelly can stay or be traded i dont care really….
MWP what do you think about him?
Can he come back next season?
Or is he going to Re-retire again?

  • Kelly should be traded while he still has some value. As for MWP, if he can play as well next year as he is this year, we can bring him back. Otherwise, re-retire.

  • So what do label your criticism of other posters? Would your comments be a basketball post? Does it have any content beyond a gratuitous insult? since you’re adamant about that. If you want to call people out, don’t be a hyprocryte. Everything you said, you can also point it back at yourself.

At least i”m talking about basketball players and the franchises in the game of basketball. Here you are talking about posters. That’s insecure.

  • why are you bashing on Sacre? Isn’t he a Laker and deserves not to have stones thrown from the peanut gallery?

  • i agree. if he wants to play come back.
if not retire and enjoy yourself MWP!
he has done well so far mentoring our young rookies.

  • i was gonna say kelly sacre and nick young are like free targets.
people always are going to criticize them until they are gone.
im used to it. but nick young is improving alot.
kelly alittle bit but he hasnt played lately so im not sure where hes at right now.

  • Alot of these problems are because we have alot of rookies…
Clarkson Russell Randle Nance Brown and Black.
And at the end of the day we have to hold coach scott accountable too.
Because hes like a manager of a store.
If the employees are doing whatever they want or out of order and whack.
The manager should be the one to tell them what their doing wrong, and get it fixed ASAP!
I feel coach scott needs to do a better job.
Half of it is the players not doing it, but the other half is coach not making them do it.
They have to learn it first then remember and keep doing it consitently.

  • This is what I have a problem with. I didn’t bash Sacre. ImaLaker4Life asked what should be done with Sacre next season. I gave my opinion in a polite and respectful way. I didn’t bash him, I said to thank him and wish him well. If you can’t tell the difference between that an throwing stones from the peanut gallery, perhaps you should just be quiet and observe for a while until you can figure it out.

  • Nobody can just climb Mt. Everest in a few hours. Unless a helicopter brings you there. But then it does not make you a good mountain climber. This is exactly what these young trio is all about. Laker fans must be patient because nobody became a good basketball player in a few games. Even Clarkson took time. Kobe, Michael Jordan. With the exception of very few players where they were instant Hall of Famer when they were starting like Magic. And that I agree with Byron Scott’s assessment. This are a different breed of horses and on a different race track. Did you ever notice how fast the games are now. Good and bad players are dropping like ants with injuries, no one is spared . I could name a few but it will take space on this column. Let the kids grow.

  • If can’t tell when someone implicitly says it’s sacarsm, then may be you need to sit it out. I don’t dive a rat’s bum whether you bash Sacre or not. So whatever internal issues you have with yourself to be wound so tight, at least let’s not pretend you’re a polite and respectful person. It’s proven not true. Just read your posts.

  • Exactly. he’s a public figure who is paid to do a job, which he can’t do well. Criticism should come his way… from any body anywhere, especially fans. Anyone who thinks public figures are off limits in a forum is simply delusional.

  • Are you trying to pick a fight with me? Are you doing it because I called you out for your content-free bashing posts? I have yet to see a post of yours with basketball content. I’ll keep my eye out, but right now I have you lumped in with the whiners, complainers and trolls, judging by what I’ve read of yours today.

And with that I’m done responding to you, unless you care to talk basketball. Them I’m all over it.

    Seeya!

  • Wow, you blaming Jeanie? Jim is the one who makes all the decisions for the team. Jeanie just runs the business side. Jim would have been in good shape right now had the Chris Paul trade gone through.

  • That’s on the Lakers for picking up his contract. Roy is playing exactly the way I thought he would be playing at this point.

  • That’s a pretty messed up thing to say. Nobody twisted the Lakers hand and forced them to trade for Hibbert. Jordan Hill was much much cheaper and they didn’t want him.

  • You call me out and say i’m picking a fight? What a woossy thing to do. play the victim after you fire the first shot.

You beech about people not posting to YOUR content as if your content is the only thing that matters. So whenever you open your eyes, you’ll always see the same thing – your POV. Pass. So might as well keep your eyes shut, your mind closed – it serves narcissists well.

For the record, my posts are primarily about basketball, players, the game, the people who run it? It’s when disrespectful posters take something that isn’t directed at them, personal that I stray. Nobody should post here to appease the Dana paradigm. Get over that.

What about your posts today? whining, complaining about other people and not about basketball. Hypocrite.

  • Just curious? why is it messed up? Did he not check out in the playoffs? Did he not have mental issues? Is someone who has professed to having mental disorders IDEAL in leading young men without disorders (that we know off)?
Other than that, it’s a great trade. We desperately needed a rim protector. And he’s exactly that.

  • He never said he had a mental disorder. In fact, he specifically said he went to see a physiologist (not a psychiatrist) to help him improve on his craft (basketball). Not because he had any mental health issues.

He credits the physiologist in helping to motivate him to work harder in the offseason.

*That’s just a horrible thing to spread around about someone when it’s not true.*

  • we have the right to like or not like a player.
true very true. but with negative we have to bring positives or alternatives.
i try to list positives with my negatives to balance it all out.
or i try to suggest options fixes.
we gotta have more than just a plan A.
i agree JB i think everyone is just really frustrated right now.
As fans we cannot attack each other we have our loyalty and on top of that we have 16 NBA championship gold trophies.
Not many NBA teams even have 1 or 2…

  • here you go.

“Hibbert revealed to ESPN he first visited a psychologist when he boarded at Georgetown Prep and has been continuing the practice. He met with mental health counselors and a team performance psychologist in Indiana to help him deal with being a high profile NBA athlete.”

Also physiologists deal in the physical while psychologist and psychiatrist deal in the mental. If you can tell the difference please expound. To me a psych is a psych. You don’t go to see them unless you’ve got issues. Same goes with mental health counselors.

But if you believed he saw the shrinks to work on his craft, no problem. All I can judge him on is that playoff run. He had issues. Definitely needed to go see them 3 a week. Cuz that performance was putrid. That much horribleness I can spread, right?

  • i thought he was 15 mil this year?
even if he is 25 next year id take that.
hes a great center and former all star.
his presence alone deters alot away from attacking.
only elite guards are even trying to go straight up to him.
like a damian liliard or eric bledsoe russell westbrook.
and he can alter or deter most attempts which is all we can ask or hope for.
you cant shut these guys down just hope to slow them down.
like he did a great job on andre drummond which probably helped us beat the pistons the other day…….
    thank HIBBERT!
he suffered a broken nose but hey we won….

  • roy broke his nose in the pistons game for us fans.
and if he didnt slow down andre drummond that would have been another LOSS!
least you could do is be respectful kid.

  • the wolves got wiggins lavine and towns.
3 future all stars i bet.
i wish dangelo was playing as well as zach is consitently thats all i wish.
he was picked #2 so he has to live up to the hype.
clarkson cant outplay him as a 46th pick.

  • agreed. Venting frustration is an avenue afforded in these forums. if people have a problem with it, they should start their own website. Let’s see how many people sign up for the church of so and so.

  • nice to try and climb Everest but don’t freeze at the base cuz you’re not properly equipped.

  • lol if the ice kills you they leave you on the top forever.
there have been people who died and they just stay up there and never come down.
thats why i threw my dream away of climbing mt everest.
plus theres Yeti bigfoots cousin. lol.

  • she means well.
i once had beef with her.
whats best is agree to disagree and move on to the next subject!
    or player?

  • Well she did call me out by name and made personal attacks – for that there is only disagreement. I have more respect for someone who believes that people should be only positive but don’t cross the line of insults if others aren’t.

  • It’s about wins and losses at the end of the day. Hibbert is doing a good job, but if he doesn’t make the Lakers a playoff team then he isn’t worth $15 million.

  • I never said he was playing bad. Just not worth $15 million. The Lakers expected him to make them a playoff team.

  • A psychologist focuses on helping you reach your goals in life. A psychiatrist is focused on keeping you from being depressed or acting out in a negative way.

He didn’t have any issues from what I can see. He just is no longer the player he once was and he is doing what he can to get back to that.

  • Webmd has a different take. But thanks for taking the time. In any case – he is on record as not seeing just one professional. As a matter of fact he’s seen each – psychiatrist, psychologist and mental health counselors. That’s alot of time spent with professionals for someone who’s working on his “craft,” unless of course he’s interning at Arkham.

  • WebMD is pretty vague, but they do say that a psychologist can’t prescribe drugs. That means that if Hibbert had a serious mental illness like you were suggesting that the psychologist would have had to refer him to a psychiatrist.

A psychologist can’t deal with anything that heavy.

Like I said they pretty much just deal with people who are dissatisfied with something and they either help them make it better (reach the goal) or help you cope with what you can’t change. A psychiatrist basically just prescribes meds 95% of the time.

Regardless, he shouldn’t be stigmatized like that either way. Hibbert is doing his job. The front office are the ones who are really messing up.
