Lakers Vs. Jazz Preview: L.A. Begins 2015-16 Preseason In Hawaii

The 2015-16 Los Angeles Lakers return to action with a roster that has been completely revamped, a clear acceptance of their current youth movement, and the type of veteran talent that could blend well enough rekindle some of the fire beneath the league’s most passionate fan base. Fans are eager to see just what second overall pick D’Angelo Russell is made of now that he, a returning Julius Randle and second-year standout Jordan Clarkson have each had several months between Summer League and training camp to develop chemistry while continuing to develop as players, individually.

What will Kobe Bryant make this season? Find out here!

Frontcourt: Gordon Hayward isn’t just Utah’s best frontcourt player, but the 25-year-old swingman has actually settled into his role as the team’s overall leader quite nicely. He’s proven to be a dependable scoring threat and capable playmaker at 6’8, and alongside Utah’s on-the-rise center Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors, the Jazz could have one of the league’s better and more versatile, young front lines.

Backcourt: Finding a way to get consistent play from his backcourt could be the biggest challenge for Coach Quinn Snyder once again this year. With last year’s lottery pick Dante Exum recovering from an offseason ACL tear, third-year point guard Trey Burke could have his best opportunity to prove he can produce consistently on both ends of the court enough to warrant the trust of the franchise moving forward.

Alec Burks returns to action after missing most of last season due to a shoulder injury, but the Jazz also have plenty to look forward to in terms of the further development of second-year SG Rodney Hood as well. Hood was particularly effective for the Jazz throughout an impressive 12-6 stretch Utah ended last season with as he contributed double-digit scoring totals in 11 of the contests.

Keys to Victory:

Team Defense: Simply having a shot-blocking specialist like Roy Hibbert or even the recently signed Robert Upshaw in the middle might help in terms over overall rim protection, but if the Lakers want to show true signs of improvement as a defensive unit, it will start with the perimeter players being able to stay in front of their assignments on a consistent basis. This will certainly be a tough task with so many scoring threats along the perimeter around the league, but it would be nice to see this team get off to a positive start in this department.

Remaining Patient: As is the case with any team with so many talented — yet inexperienced — players, patience will still be key, especially over some of the early stretches of the schedule. This goes for both ends of the court, as the Lakers are almost certain to need a bit of latitude to adjust on offense and defense with so many new faces and such a plethora of young players.

Play For One Another: More than anything, the last couple seasons of futility have proven that if you don’t play as a cohesive unit. Physical health is always key in professional sports, but a healthy level of chemistry and a unified team goal can actually contribute significantly toward overall success.

    1. Well said bro!

      No mercy!

When will we know the actual lineup?

As of now the starting lineup looks to be:
Kobe, Hibbert, Randle, Clarkson, and Russell (if cleared to play).

  • As long as nobody gets hurt, Russell has more assists than turnovers and Randle shoots 50%+ and grabs some rebounds I’ll be happy.

    1. Mudiay had like 3 assists and 8 turnovers in his unofficial debut and shot pretty poor… I know it will be expected for Russell to have a few mistakes but that will be part of his learning process after all
      I can’t wait

      1. I don’t like mudiay at all, he seems like a very aggressive low BB IQ player, which is dangerous at PG.

Russell is a high BB IQ player, pass first without elite altheticism. He can be a A Steve Nash type of player if he can stay healthy and have people around him who make open shots.

It’ll be a process…he will look shaky most of the season IMO

        1. I think Russell’s athleticism is underrated. He had a 39 inch vertical i think in the pre draft workouts. His first step is average and his speed is above average. Overall I would say he has above average athleticism but not elite like a Curry or CP3

          1. We have not seen Russells full athleticism, because his body still has baby traits. In other words his body is still growing and as it matures his athleticism will also be more apparent.

        2. Mudiay’s IQ isn’t bad he’s got a nice feel to the game he just makes some careless passes at times which can be fixed, he also isn’t a great shooter and went against CP3 (one of the best PG’s in the league) in his first game. His numbers should improve over time same with Russell who might struggle tonight.

  • Trey Burke needs to show for Utah that he’s more of a scoring point guard. He needs to show he can defend and make plays for them. Dante Exum’s injury left Utah without it’s glue and the guy who created and provided the defensive energy that jump-started their team towards the middle and end of last year.

The rest of this article is on point about the Lakers. Patience, defense, and playing as a cohesive unit. Defense starts with Hibbert and ends with the other guys listening to him, doing what he says and communication. He’s the anchor, not just because of his size but vocally. If everyone responds, stays in front of their man and does their job, the Lakers can win.

  • Go lakers… let us start improving today..let’s win…I hope BS get the magic touch to figure out what to do

  • Today’s the beginning of an interesting season.
I’m looking forward to everybody’s play.
Most of all will Russell take the first step in proving doubters wrong..
Will Randle slow his game and finally dominate at the level we know he can..
And will Clarkson explode of the Jazz like he usually does.
I don’t expect to see everything…ill be more than happy with some flashes here and there because they’re still young rookies..
But I expect this to be the start of something special in lakerland.

  • Cannot believe it: the game cannot even be purchased with the League Pass… Even in 2015 it’s still fucking hard to be a Laker fan outside of the US…

      1. That’s very kind of you but my main problem is that I cannot do like last year when I would get up at 5.00 in the morning to watch the games live. That’s why I wanted to purchase the League Pass that allows you to watch games whenever you want…

        1. There’s a youtube channel- LakersTV. The user should be uploading games there. Might also do some live streaming

        1. Aw man, those windows…Glad I don’t have to use FR anymore but they were a godsend for this here Laker fan for a couple of years.

I still wish the NBA would provide a Netflix type streaming service so I finally rid myself of cable as I literally keep cable for sports. Everything else I like I can find through streaming sources like Netflix and such.

          1. The Lakers are the only reason why i still have cable, if i could get the Lakers on NetFlix , cable would have to R.I.P.

    1. Have they offered League Pass yet I have not seen any pricing- I get it every year. but you can watch on NBA TV, if that’s what your talking about.

        1. Shit. So does that mean the rest of us will have to limp along with a lot less of your comments? It’s going to be difficult..:-)

  • Should be a blowout. Lakers have an advantage everywhere. Except at PF. Favors is coming into his own a force at the 4 and Randle is just starting out. This would be a very good initial test for Randle to see how he fares on the defensive side against a semi beast like Favors. Favors had 1.7 blocks/game. I’d like to see how Randle can use his quickness against that Gobert/Favors interior.

    1. Blowout in favor of the Lakers? One team has played together. One hasn’t. One is filled with rookies, one isn’t. One has chemistry and ended the season playing well…the other is a big ?

        1. How is that being negative? Other fan bases complain about us due to dreamers.
A blowout is not a realistic expectation. A win would be great, but it’s unlikely. Scott will try to give mins to every single player.

Secondly, you nor the guy I replied to own this site.

Third, I have an opinion. My opinion will be heard as much if not more than others

Fourth, if one makes a statement “blowout win” or wtvr, I expect some reasoning or arguments behind that preposterous claim. Yet, there was none. Just thumbs up that highlights the delusional Lakers fans.

Fifth, I believe the Lakers can be good soon and might make it to the playoffs this year; the top playoff west teams got stronger, but the middle-lower portion were severely weakened, and many teams in the west have to build chemistry as they have new pieces. One won’t know till the season is at least ten games in.

I welcome excitement and optimism, but making judgements/decisions on pure belief/heart is simply going to lead to a series of maddening and frustrating games for you this season if the results your heart desires don’t come into fruition

          1. Who cares about all that!

Just get on board with the rest of us “delusional” real fans and ride the optimistic wave, or keep to yourself.

We don’t need negativity. That’s it.

          2. There’s absolutely no negativity. You choose to read what you want, and choose to interpret it how you wish. Fans like you give “REAL” fans a bad rep. Cuz you “REAL” fans think we’re getting every star and every rookie will become a star.
Problems are never fixed if “everything is perfect because we’re together and there’s a rainbow and look look…a unicorn. Oh, here comes the leprechaun. Ah, so nice”

Who cares about all that? Well, people or fans or “FAKE” fans who would like to have a good knowledgeable conversation, discussion, or argument. Not some childish pipe dream.

            Sidenote:
            1) don’t tell me to shut it, cuz I have the right to express my opinion…even if it’s not sprinkled with glitter or sparkles like Christmas lights on Santa’s reindeer. I rather be straightforward than straight dreamin

            2) don’t even try to imply I’m not a real fan…Cuz I bet anything you complained at least once during last season, and that, wouldn’t be a “REAL” fan in your eyes

          3. We need Lakers fans like you man. Half these dudes are high as fuck while commenting.

            #nologic

          4. Hey no problem, dude. I gave it a shot base on a hunch. And there is a reasoning, All these new guys wanting to prove themselves and come out to play with an edge. – I’m wrong. My bad. It was getting to be a blow out for the lakers then they pooped in their pants the second half and forgot to play.

but hey, who knew Byron was going to let Robert masSacre a win by playing a very destructive 15 minutes. Couldn’t hit a shoit, stood around. Whenever someone goes to basket against, the shot goes up. Against the jazz scrub centers our players bailed out of the paint. They win.

          5. No prob. Had an issue with the other user whose reply was more of a personal attack than a contradictory basketball opinion

          6. In fairness, what you said regarding my “hunch” is more of a personal attack than what Laker Lifer said. I assure you that hunch was not “delusional” but I get it, The final score says I’m wrong. I’ll man up. But After hearing how hard the guys worked in practice, how hyped they were, I figure they, namely the guys who weren’t’ there last year, could play up to their potential and with energy first time out and blow the jazz out. And any body can get blown out on any given night (Toronto blew out the the Clips.)

And as it turns out the scrubs who finished last year were the ones letting the game get away. That part I didn’t want. didn’t expect. didn’t get. A freakin 33 to 12 deficit in the 4th. That had nothing to do with the lakers top tier talent vs the Jazz’s.

Anyways, cut Lifer some slack. He’s a Laker fan who likes thing upbeat but at least he’s not a fanatical. It could have been an upbeat 1st game had it not been for the Sacre/Black combo.

          7. I was referring to the initial replies. My initial reply wasn’t an attack. It was a question. I was wondering/ in shock how somehow could arrive to that conclusion “blowout”

His was, why are you here if you’re negative about this team. Essentially, a get lost…nobody wants you here.

That agitated me, so I responded in a similar manner.

He continued with subtle jabs about my fan level, to shut it if my opinion differs, and that nobody cares about “all that”

So yes, I reacted. Reasonably? Yes. Appropriately? To some, no. But idc. It is what it is. I’m not out to make friends

in regards to the game, the rookies need to improve every game. The coach needs to find an offensive system. Randle needs to improve, he’s still the raging bull running the streets of Spain.

Next time, before you get a hunch. Remember, talk is cheap. These rookies can talk…but until they start showing, it’s just talk. Potential is high, but every day they lag, have a bad day, or fail to improve…that window of opportunity closes. They go from the next Westbrook, shaq, Kobe, LeBron…to wes Johnson, jonny flynn, and Michael beasley

          8. I know talk is cheap. But if you take away that 4th, the core unit was neck to neck with the jazz despite not single one of them shooting the ball well. Had they shot well, blowout. Question is why is the whole team clanking, the likely answer is, no legs. Byron’s brutal practices left no recovering time even for the young guns.

But speaking of windows, There’s one guy whose window shoulda been shut down last year – Sacre. For whatever reason, injuries, Byron’s brain fart, If that 4th quarter unit is the “Lakers” come the season, they will definitely get the #1 pick.

Have patience on Randle. Clarkson was going 100mph last year too until the later portion of the season. Lots of lessons to be learned ahead. Randle’s game against Favors should open his eyes a little. That was lesson 1.

          9. haha i don’t hame on Robert Sacre like sum of you all do, but then nick name Robert MaSACRE is a great one !!

    2. PG: Trey Burke vs D’Angelo Russell
Winner: Burke because of the experience and chemistry with teammates.

SG: Alec Burks vs Jordan Clarkson
Winner: Clarkson if Kobe allows him to play freely and not keep asking for the ball from him

SF: Gordon Hayward vs Kobe Bryant
Winner: Hayward because Kobe might be a little bit rusty.

PF: Derrick Favors vs Julius Randle
Winner: Favors simply because Randle hasn’t done enough in the Summer League to convince me.

C: Rudy Gobert vs Roy Hibbert
Winner: Gobert because of his after All-Stars game stats while Hibbert had a bad season. Could go either way if Hibbert becoming faster and agile after losing weight.

I hope I’m wrong but it’s going to be a tough game for the Lakers.

      1. you’re mostly right.
Trey definitely got the edge over Russell.

Hayward over Kobe because he played more.
        Favors over Randle was expected.
Gobert was a wash with Hibert but that’s due to Jazz players giving him easy dunks. Hibert had to work to get his points. I thought Hibert looked better than Gobert activity wise on both ends.
Of course Clarkson blew out the other burkes.

One of the big factors in the game was Sacre not being presence for 15 minutes. The other 2 jazz centers made their mark 10 rebs in 18 minutes. Sacre/Black got 6 in 28. That’s where the game was lost, the backup centers battle.

      1. Hey what can I say. it’s Halloween month, thought I would get out the Monkey’s paw to make predictions. I wonder if I should use the last 2 “predictions” in the preseason.

  • I think their will be some ugly basketball tonight. Byron Scott’s offensive system doesn’t produce exciting play. Ball movement will be very stagnant and there will be poor spacing on the floor.

  • 1ST QUARTER

    Kobe 5 pts
    Clarkson 4 pts

So far i like what i see, they are rusty, and they are all trying to get into there grove but its clear that all 5 players displaying what they bring to the table. Super sweet pass D’ANGELO to RANDLE for a slam dunk.

    1. Yeah but we have a lot of unproven rookies, remember the Jazz are a potential 8th seed considering how they finished up their season after the All-Star break last season.

        1. I wouldn’t blame him yet.

          1. No chemistry, this roster has been revamped
          2. A lot of unproven rookies
          3. Scott needs to make new adjustments with new players

          1. Right again but next year it’s all on Byron if no progress with atleast one superstar

          2. True, but hey we see what he has done to Kidd. CP3 and Irving. Let’s see what he does to Russel or Clarkson

  • I know it’s only preseason but damn! I hate to lose! Too much talent on this team to be taking L’s

  • I know it’s just the preseason, but it’s still nice to win a few games, this 4th quarter lineup is just horrible, Ryan freakin Kelly, Anthony Brown, Tarik Black, no offensive option whatsoever. I hate to see Lakers lose, enough is enough, we been through enough losing last season. Byron Scott should always coach to win, even in preseason.

    1. There is no short cut from rebuilding man, its going to take time. Lakers fans can only “hope” for an accelerated recovery from this fading franchise.

  • Sadly we could’ve actually won, understandably have to see all the options we have but damn that last lineup should’ve been the big 3 Byron dumb scott! Why would we wanna see scrubs ???

    1. He’s doing what every coach in a preseason would do, to give playing time to everybody. If I were him, I would’ve put my starting 5 in the 4th, play to win, but oh well I’m not the coach.

      1. Im hoping that’s y Sacre was playing a lot. for they can get a good look at him to drop his asss

      2. No time should be given to Sacre. That Black/Sacre combo got murdered by the Jazz backup centers. And I kinda agree, play to at least be competitive – That 4th quarter lineup was inviting a blowout. Sacre had no energy, no purpose in there.
