Lakers Vs. Warriors Game Cancelled In Third Quarter (VIDEOS)
Lakers Vs. Warriors Game Cancelled In Third Quarter (videos)

It was a rare ending to the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Golden State Warriors preseason game at the Valley View Casino Arena in San Diego on Saturday night. After multiple players slipped on the basketball court during the first half and third quarter of action, the officials voiced their concern about the unsafe conditions of the floor. Head coaches Byron Scott and Luke Walton agreed to call off the game with two minutes and 16 seconds to play in the third quarter.

The game ended with the Lakers ahead 85-70, and Jordan Clarkson leading the Lakers with 17 points, followed by Julius Randle with 14. Steph Curry finished the game with 19 points in his 22 minutes for the Warriors.

Lakers point guard Marcelo Huertas made his NBA debut after missing the beginning of the Lakers preseason with a hamstring injury, and Huertas impressed, getting all of his teammates involved and dishing out six assists in just 12 minutes of action. In our post-game videos, with the exception of all the talk about the unsafe floor conditions, Huertas “true point guard” ability was center stage.

  • How can you schedule a preseason game in a dump like this in the first place? It was a known problem.

Loved to finally get a look at Huertas (No, not for his hair) and gosh diggedy darn did he impress! Also, Randle’s cojones are now dragging on the floor. Man has that kid grown fast in the last couple of months!

  • Well I, for one, really enjoyed those 3 quarters. Lots to smile about. Wow, Huertas is more than I expected. It seemed like just about everybody was looking pretty good last night. Keep it up.

  • This team definitely plays different on both sides with Kobe out. Not saying they’re better without him, but they play more freely. This team has to focus on ball movement if they want any success. Byron has to stress that to Kobe.

I’m not a Kobe hater, I just want him to play the right way.

  • And with Kobe playing limited minutes, Julius Randle should be the main scoring option on offense.

  • Final roster to me seems pretty simple:

    Russell/Huertas
    Clarkson/Williams/ABrown
    Kobe/Young/MWP
    Randle/Bass/Kelly/Nance
    Hibbert/Black/Upshaw

    Roster spot battles between-
Black vs. Sacre = 1 spot
MWP vs. Frazier vs. JBrown vs Holmes = 1 spot

  • Well, three losses, one win with an Asterix, and an incomplete. Not exactly a stunning start, but the good news is, the team is coming together, and they are going to be better than everyone thought. Randle and Clarkson continue to impress, Hibbert looks good, Sweet Lou was a great addition for bench production, and Huertas looks more than capable of running the 2nd unit. Now if Sacre vs Upshaw wasn’t obvious before this last game, it surely is now, Upshaw with less experience and less knowledge of the system, clearly out played Sacre.

  • Kobe is so great at getting into position to receive a pass especially in the post that it’s hard to not pass him the ball in that situation. But Kobe has to make quicker decisions and move the ball if a shot isn’t there.

  • Well said but they all need to move more and let the Pg find them, and they will, we have not had this type PG for a long time, both willing to pass first, that makes the game wide open for all, who work gets paid with a pass.

  • Agreed. Although A. Brown is primarily a 3. Fact is with this roster we technically already have 4 PG in Russell, Huertas, Clarkson and Williams, 5 SG, 4 SF, 5 PF and 4 Centers (if Bass can really play there in a small ball lineup, I’m not yet convinced but Byron Scott apparently is).
You have in there a good-to-great veteran at every position, two 6th-man of the year candidates and a solid group of kids at every position who all have potential to be brilliant and are all extremely coachable.
That sounds well balanced to me and with the right coaching they could really become a dark horse by the middle of the year.

  • This Huertas… Knew him a bit from Barcelona but still in awe. For a first game what an immediate impact, right what the second unit needed since D’Angelo doesn’t have yet the high-pace required for this unit.
Moving D’Angelo to the first unit, where his complementarity with Clarkson should be better suited, and getting Huertas to make Young and Williams shine… With a Kelly/Black frontcourt that could really be a very nice lineup for some of this ‘modern basketball’.
The thing I’d note is that we’ve been struggling against tall and aggressive frontcourts but we show some great balling against small ball, playing their own games faster and with more intensity. If now we can get Huertas ball movement influence… And let’s hope MWP gets his shooting back gradually, he’s showing some great things already.
    Very, very interesting game.

  • The Lakers haven’t had a good and/or healthy point guard since Fisher. They may have two in Russell and Huertas now. And Clarkson and Williams and even Kobe in an emergency so they look much better. And Hibbert, Upshaw, Black, Randle, and Nance Jr. holding down for the front court. We are getting closer. My guess is stay healthy and see what addition(s) if any are needed later.

  • Starters: Kobe, Huertas, Swag, Upshaw, Hibbert: Keeping 2nd Unit: F/C – Bass, Randel, nance, kelly, G/F – M Fraz II, Sweet Lou Williams, Jabari, clarkson, Anthony Brown. Thats fourteen. Deep, all my listed guards can pass, shoot, dribble – Go Lakers

  • Even I won’t argue that. But in Kobe’s defense every time the Lakers have won a championship their have been players like Bynum, Odom, and Gasol, Shaq, and Fisher, averaging 16,18,and 20 points plus all while Kobe has averaged 20 plus points at the same time.

So obviously Kobe moves the ball and makes the right decisions when he has a capable point guard and capable team mates all there to support him as good team mates do.

And Kobe is still the guy to provide the big shots, leadership, and big heart, should the team be able to stay healthy enough to make the playoffs.

And remember none of these guys have won any significant regular season games which are much tougher than a preseason game.

Remember Kobe’s kick outs to MWP, Robert Horry, and Fisher for big three point shots in big games?

Kobe has an amazing basketball IQ. And is the Ultimate team player for those who want to win a championship.

Of course those that know nothing about what it takes to win a championship or have never done so personally can’t relate to the value a Kobe brings to a team. Don’t just ask anybody because everybody doesn’t know what it takes.

Just ask champions like Shaq, MJ, Magic, Bird, Dr. J, D. Wade, among others about Kobe, if you want the truth. Because they know a lot about great players and champions.

Please remember, none of these guys have won any significant regular season games which are much tougher than a preseason game.

They will need leadership from veterans who have been there and done that.

  • A. Brown hasn’t looked that impressive. Normally I’d take youth over vets in a rebuild. However, IMO Metta does more (can play the 2,3,4 spots + leadership ) for the team more than Brown. If Brown gets sent down to D-league without an NBA contrtact, I don’t think anyone picks him up right away. If metta gets hurt, then Brown would get the call up.

  • My choice for ROY = Robert Upshaw (hands down) Cornerstone for Laker Dynasty. Highly Honorable mention (my top 5): Huertas, Nance, Michael Frazier II, Anthony Brown, Jabari Brown. • The role of a PG is definitely diminished with the skillset of Randle and Clarkson. Add to that Kobe. 3 players who can take the ball full court, drive/pass/shoot – a triple threat. I can’t remember Kobe playing with such a dynamic 4 like Randle.

  • It would probably be in the best interest of the team if Kobe don’t play at all this season. Comparing this game to the game vs Kings, the ball moved better and the defense was not bad either. Kobe’s desire to put his personal interest ahead of the team is really detrimental to the team’s success.

  • There’s 1 cut that’s not so tough. Sacre. The dude has 2 skills on the court. 1) Fouling to give the other team free throws. 2) Taking the ball out since every time someone drives, they’ll likely to score. towel waving could count as being on the court too. but hey, that would make him a triple threat.
Sacre and Upshaw had the same amount of minutes. The stats seem to show Sacre did better. But that’s just fake stats. Upshaw didn’t get as many rebounds but every one can see he clearly is head and shoulder ahead of Sacre. He gets rebounds with effort. I think Sacre’s 4 rebounds were mainly because he was standing there alone. Upshaw in the paint scares away drivers and makes multiple efforts to block shots, hence the foul. And you’ll never see Sacre up fake from 15 then take it to the rim and dunk. NEVER.

  • A Brown role in offense is essentially a spot shooter. He’s been left unguarded several times but the ball movement in the first unit was bad (until yesterday) and he didn’t get the kind of passes Young and Williams will now get from Huertas.
With more ball movement he will start to shine, but that’s not his primary job. His job is definitely on the defensive end, and aside of MWP and Hibbert I didn’t get to see anyone better than him so far in man-to-man D.
I’d say both MWP and A. Bown will make the roster while JBrown, on the other end… Holmes and Frazier are clearly out at this point.
Although it’s true enough A. Brown should see some D-League early this year, along with Nance and Upshaw (if retained).

  • 3 guys who are “willing to PASS” and can score on their own do not need a PG to get them the ball. Those 3 need spot up shooters and cutters than another PG. Byron has Randle bring the ball up quite often. In which case, the role of a PG becomes a shooter. Balance > redundancy.

  • Well truthfully I would trade winning that last preseason game to sweep the 4 games against the Warriors during the regular season. You may recall the Lakers owned the Warriors and swept them for years until our talent level dropped off so low and theirs raised so high?

Not to mention they have managed to keep the same nucleus of players, and remained healthy, unlike the Lakers.

I just want us to keep improving. And each player to a man work to bring their best effort on both offense and defense while taking less plays off. And I want the Lakers to stay healthy.

  • i agree but one problem we face that other playoff bound teams dont face. We have a new coach and so many new players. It will take time for the coach, players, and team to all get on the same page. Trust, chemistry, and confidence never happens over night. And ups, downs, and growing pains must be expected. So patience and supporting the process is critical especially by the players. We know most of the fans will only be there when the team and coach is winning. So it’s up to the team to block out the noise (especially negative ) from bandwagon fans and Laker bashing media. Veterans like Fisher, Horry, and MWP usually help to solidify the team and locker room.

  • What makes me feel great about this year , is we are the under dogs with the media, where all the LAKERS can look and smile and say that’s what we are here for as a team to prove them wrong, and they are just hard headed enough to do it, I see a lot of strength in all of them .

  • Lakers have 6-7 players who can avg 12-15 ppg. Until last night I was wondering who could be a 20+ scorer on a consistent basis beside Kobe. Maybe Randle &/or Clarkson can fill that role. Any other opinions out there?

  • Man, i have to say. We are comming!

Randle and Clarkson will play good this season. I have no doubt. They are NBA ready. Not sure about D’angelo, he probaly will have some ups and downs this year.
Our bench is a dangerous one. Huertas, Lou, Young, Bass and Black, very nice!

If we can start the season pretty decent we can trade in january to bost our talent and go to the playoffs. We have some good assets already to do that.
Maybe Durant can consider us next year, if he can see Randle and D’angelo as allstar players. Our rebuild is in a nice flow…

  • The NBA Analyst say, Lakers are going to win less then 30 games, the entire
year and not be in Playoffs. I DON’T AGREE. If YOU agree with Those NBA
Expert Analysts’ – You might want to sit up and take notes. Class is
open. Lakers will have 26 wins by All-Star Break. For all you Laker
    Doubters / Haters – I wish I could throw Upshaw’s dunk or Nance’s Dunk
    “right in your face”!!

  • Hey Commander-in-Chief – With our new Veteran NBA Ready SuperGuards (latest addition) and youthful Randal and Center Upshaw, it has spoken volumes to getting Mr five NBA Rings, KB some quality minutes and major “role” player time. Kobe is a GOD, and will add two more NBA rings, to his GOD P&G legacy – don’t think KB would have accomplished Sooo much without you haters and doubters out there:) I’m learning to Love them Democrats thou bro . . .

  • Of course there are a few opinions and mine are always available. I think Lou Williams and Young are capable and don’t shy away from scoring. You could just about select any one of the point guards or shooting guards and count on them being able to score.

Nance Jr. looks like he is capable of taking you off the dribble or spotting up to knock down some points.

We shouldn’t find scoring as hard with finally having a couple of healthy and capable point guards and team talent upgrades.

My concern and I’m sure Byron’s is too is a lock down defender for containing NBA super star players and overall team defense. We need to play well and hard on both sides of the ball.

I’m not sure how good a defender Larry Nance Jr. could be for us.

But the season play and how successful the team is will determine what’s needed by mid season trade deadline.

  • Good comment fellow citizen :)… However, I don’t see Kobe gaming as a role player. Exhibit A: look at the game against Sacramento. He jacked up what six shots in equal minutes in the first quarter? As a result the offense stagnated and they got lazy on the defensive end of the floor. Compare that game against the Warriors and you will notice a totally different laker team without Kobe. Kobe was great I’m not denying that. At this point in his career, he needs to understand that he can no longer take over games; therefore, should take a lesser role. Even Donald Trump would agree with me 🙂

  • While I can appreciate your optimism, I think 35 wins would be on the high end for this team this year……which would be a great turn-around and set the stage for 45+ the following season.

  • I’m sure both Clarkson and Randle could average 20 with enough looks, but they’re both so unselfish I don’t think they’ll get enough.
