Some have high expectations for the Lakers number seven pick in the 2014 NBA draft, power forward out of Kentucky, Julius Randle. Randle’s former coach John Calipari recently said he expects him to be in the mix for Rookie of the Year.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak lowered the bar for Randle, and evaluated some of his strengths as well as some of his expected shortcomings due to him being just 19 years old. Kupchak highlighted his quickness, ball handling ability and physicality, while also noting that Randle gravitating towards contact plays has its pluses and minuses.

Kupchak also responds to whether he sees Randle possessing the ability to play small forward at the NBA level while displaying the utmost confidence that Randle can defend the small forward position.
