Roy Hibbert, D’Angelo Russell Impressing Teammates In Preseason Win (VIDEOS)
Roy Hibbert, D’angelo Russell Impressing Teammates In Preseason Win (videos)

The Los Angeles Lakers nabbed their first win of the preseason on Sunday night at Staples Center against the Maccabi Haifa, 126-83. Kobe Bryant led the way with 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting in his 18 minutes and Roy Hibbert corralled an impressive 16 rebounds to go along with his five assists and eight points.

Though Lakers head coach Byron Scott was not happy with the team’s 22 turnovers, he was pleased with the defensive effort, outrebounding Maccabi Haifa, 61-26. D’Angelo Russell returned to game action, since bruising his glute in the Lakers second preseason game against the Utah Jazz, finishing with 11 assists to go along with his five points. Prior to Russell being cleared for game action on Sunday, Scott had already decided to start Anthony Brown and said he was impressed with what the Stanford graduate was able to show, especially on the defensive end.

In our post-game videos below, Roy Hibbert is clearly showing what makes him so valuable on an NBA roster, receiving waves of compliments from his teammates. Plus, Hibbert talks about why knowing exactly what his role is, paves the path for a successful career in Los Angeles.

Caught Tarik Black’s post interview on TWC, he mentions players play harder with pg’s like Russell who get them more involved. One of the biggest reasons why Russ will help to attract top tier talent in a few years.

  • Side note Rondo air balls a free throw…….where are all Rondo to Lakers fan boys now?

  • I was for Rondo at the start of last season. But after that debacle in Dallas it was obvious FO wasn’t much interested in him after. Rondo’s time to show what he has but with that said Russ looks like he’ll exceed expectations (provided he stays healthy) thus it’s a no go (mold the youth).

  • Smh, not all of them as starters. You’re more for having Russ, JC6 and Randle start, I’m for placing the best product on the floor (from the start) which don’t see it including all 3 at once.

Towards the middle of the season is one thing if it proves to be that way as opposed to the inexperience.

  • I never was about all three starting. I just feel it’s senseless to slow develop them just because they are rookies. Those days are over. Plus we are a back to back lotto team and it’s best to go through the growing pains of our long term investments now. Van Exel & Jones, Beal and Wall, Westbrook, KD and Ibaka, Curry & Thompson, the Celtics are doing it with Smart and Bradley.

Randle is proving he’s ready. JC is ready. Kobe needs to play off the ball to maximize management of his health. Russell is the key to keeping Kobe off ball & this is why you constantly hear Kobe talking Russell up.

  • I agree. Those two need as much time together on court as possible. If we’re really grooming them to be our future (along with Randle) then the sooner they get used to playing together on the NBA level, the better, and the more they do that, the better they’ll (and the Lakers will) be.

  • If they go 1 and 5, there is no way Scott is going to sit back and watch his job become jeopardized by letting the rookies continue to start games. He’ll select the player or players he think will win now and have them start the games.

  • 1-5? How about 1-10 last season with vets and no rotation change? That happened. 1-5 is too early in the process.

  • ESPN smh. Everyone thinks turning around the Lakers can happen overnight. I guess media thinks Lakers should be winning the title every year.

  • maybe somewhere in between because 1-10 is too far behind to even be relevant in terms of striking distance of the playoffs. I know playoffs isn’t a real possibility but this team has to be competitive; they are the Lakers after all.

  • Good point, good post.

We need to find the correct balance of youth and vets.

Russel is not ready offensively (yet) but defensively he is an energizer rabbit and his commanding of the pace of the game, his calmness under pressure, his court vision, and his ball threading are THE BEST I HAVE SEEN since Magic!
    No lie.

Russell is the key to unleashing our offensive firepower. He holds the team together very well.

I am beyond impressed with his maturity on the court!

  • I would like to see how well Huertas can adapt to this team before deciding if Russell comes off the bench or not, but Russell is holding it down and he is going to make my man Kobe and Randle even greater than they already are!

I am so PROUD of Russell.

  • From the very first preseason game, I AM LOVING THIS TEAM!
I can not say the same about last year.

Russell is an Oak tree of maturity and confidence!
On the flipside, Kobe is reju-VINO-ated!
Hibbert with the soft touch and hard defense.
Randle is Taz the Tasmanian Devil.
    Clarkson is a ball thief.

Not even needing to mention our backcourt.

  • Huertas, I’m figuring he will be the pg off the bench. I’m looking forward to see what he’s got also. Wouldn’t be mad if he played like Pablo Pridgoni as a mid 30’s NBA rookie.

  • Bench DR, the Project Rook, kid just Doesn’t have it, this year – Lou Williams, is all we got. LW is the best so far – Lou can run offense, & is leading scorer. I want the rest of LNation to see, what DR can’t do – so I hope DR to come off the bench. Put D’Lo up against Rondo, McLemore, and Collison. Then let LNation watch, the poor 2nd yr play of Clarkson try his weak attempts, at running offense. These 2 guys DR & JC need to show rest of LN, what they WILL in 2-3 yrs should be able to do, run effectively Laker offense (DR & JC, just can’t up-end my thinking of what an Elite pg should be . . . hopefully one Pie-in-the-sky day they will, I got my fingers crossed too. . .)

  • Count me in! The last time I felt soooo good watching a Lakers team playing, was the 2009 team. It’s something that you can’t explain, but, the Chemistry, the Joy, every one looking for each other, that’s like a Family. They could not be labeled as champion, but, they are heading in the right direction. #BleedPurpleAndGold

  • No way too early for that? Why,he had a minor injury,do you bench him for that? He would be good off the bench but why slow down his development? He is doing a good job, doesn’t look like its too big for him.Let him learn how to lead now.

  • the linup of jc and russ is a -22 in this preseason

when one of them is on the court by them selfs they are a +63

i dont think its hard to see they are not working together well

  • 1 pre season game together, on the same backcourt, try getting away from over analyzing numbers its too early, its not like the Lakers will damage a championship run or a high playoff seeding by keeping the young guards in the lineup. They can put what people will think is the best lineup in to start and that lineup may not be a playoff team,so continue to go young…Nothing to lose.

Bscott didnt make any mistakes outside of overplaying kobe. that was it. anything else you can put that on injuries(not his fault), and on have a team full of 1 year contract players. you cant coach a team full of 1 year guys that are not super talented and espect anything but what we got. which was a top draft pick.

the only problem with russell coming off the bench means we have to deal with JC’s lack of defense on the pg’s. right now Russell is a better defender than he is, even though JC is much more explosive. neither are good defenders at that spot yet. but jc has a long way to go in that dept.

thats a misleading number. the first 2 games were just that the first 2 games. they were also win bscott had guys running like crazy so guys were dead tired and they looked it. there was no sign of it being a bad combo between the two of them. 3 and 4 games in every player is getting better. so no matter what lineups you use they will look a ton better than they did in games 1 and 2. you have to take that into account. which is why you should never use 2 of the first preseason games to decide a tandem can or cant work.

  • Show-case 6’9″ F Holmes – Solid Like to see if can play Defense. Showcase
Frazier G – Defense, is what I’am looking for. DR & JC have been
allowing TOO many guards deep into paint, and unable SO Far to slow down
Opponents on D. Showcase 7’0″ Upshaw – let Hibbert rest sore knees. (No
MORE Sacre, Black, Kelly – they had years to showcase)

  • “I never was about all three starting.”

?!, sure you have, you’ve REPEATEDLY stated that top draft picks should start. That goes for Russ and Randle (7th pick). However, again, just b/c they don’t start doesn’t mean that they won’t be starters by the time the season is over.

For the first few weeks I’d start JC (1), Lou(2),Kobe (3), Bass (4) and Hibbert. By early/mid December I’d expect Russell to be starting, also not sure about giving a position to huertas given hte hasn’t even played a game and is expect to sit out today’s game vs Kings. That leaves 3 games for him to showcase his skills.

If so (waiving Huerta’s) I’d keep a 14 man roster to allow the team to possibly bring in another PG (depending on how things turn out) down the road. Thus, JC6 may be playing 38+ minutes alot once Russ assumes the starting pg position, switching JC6 to the 2 (starter) and as the 2 backup bench man.

Let’s see what cuts FO makes first, tho IMO it’s obvious Holmes and Frazier should be the first to go IMO.

  • Go back and check. I’ve stood fast on lotto teams starting top picks. We are a lotto team and have no reason to slow develop the youth.

Kobe is obviously on board with the starting of the youth as he constantly talks them up. I’d be shocked if Scott deviated from the youth movement.

  • Not that I’m at all saying JC n Russ are on the same level (yet 🙂 ) but all the two-player tandems in basketball history took some time getting better at playing together, from Jordan/Pippen to Russell/Durant. You got to crawl before you can walk.

  • They’re both PGs, but Russell is more of a natural/pure PG where JC is more of a combo guard that leans towards shooting guard.
