<< 1976-77 Los Angeles Lakers | 1978-79 Los Angeles Lakers >>

The 1977-78 Los Angeles Lakers were becoming stagnant with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at the helm and no one by his side to help him out. They went 45-37, good enough to make the newly-added first round, their first experience with this part of the postseason.

There, as the No. 5 seed, they would play the fourth-seeded Seattle SuperSonics in a three-game series. They would not be able to advance, with the Lakers failing to win yet again despite having one of the NBA’s best on their roster.

At the very least, the SuperSonics were able to make the Lakers feel a bit better about their loss by making it to the Finals. There, they would play the Washington Bullets in one of the more unique Finals matchups.

The Bullets and SuperSonics played a great seven-game series, but it was the Bullets would reign victorious. This would be their first title in three trips to the Finals.
