2010 NBA Finals Game 7 Still Holds Second Highest Ratings

kobebryant2010After LeBron James and the Miami Heat captured back-to-back championships in three years of consecutive Finals appearances, it still didn’t garner more ratings than Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics.

This year’s Game 7 between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs earned an  17.7 overnight rating, but the 2010 Lakers’ thrilling 83-79 victory over the Celtics earned an 18.2 overnight rating.

The Lakers-Celtics Game 7 received the highest ratings for an NBA game since Michael Jordan won his sixth championship with the Chicago Bulls against Karl Malone’s Utah Jazz in the 1998 Finals, which earned a 22.9. The game in which the Lakers came back from a 13-point deficit in the third quarter garnered a 39.7 rating in Los Angeles and a 33.9 in Boston.

The rating was 32 percent higher than the only other Game 7 in the past 16 years. In comparison, the 2005 NBA Finals series that featured the San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons only drew a 13.8.

Lakers fans are all over the world, and it’s no surprise how popular this organization is despite all the media attention LeBron James and the Miami Heat have received since “The Big Three” was created in 2010.
