With the NBA Draft quickly approaching on June 26, all the focus for the Los Angeles Lakers is whether they will keep the seventh pick. While the team is leaning toward keeping the pick, Los Angeles has been in numerous trade rumors over the past week as they are attempting to move Steve Nash’s contract.

However, the Lakers remain without a head coach since Mike D’Antoni’s resignation, but Byron Scott has emerged as the leading candidate for the vacant position according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne:

“While the Lakers remain focused on Thursday’s draft and the start of free agency July 1, sources tell ESPN.com that former star Byron Scott has emerged as the leading candidate for the head-coaching job after impressing in three interviews with the team.”

After the unsuccessful hires of Mike Brown and Mike D’Antoni, the Lakers have taken their time interviewing numerous candidates in hopes of finding a head coach that will provide stability for the franchise. While general manager Mitch Kupchak ideally wanted to hire a coach before the NBA Draft, having free agents become part of the process by sharing their personal opinions is an intriguing one.

Since Monday, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony have decided to opt out of their contracts and will become unrestricted free agents on July 1. While it remains to be seen if Los Angeles is a realistic destination for LeBron, the Lakers are expected to meet with Carmelo Anthony after free agency officially begins.
