January 18, 1972

Jerry West lived up to his ‘Mr. Clutch’ nickname at the 1972 NBA All-Star Game by hitting a 20-foot jump shot to give the West a 112-110 win. He finished with 13 points en route to NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player honors.

Chick Hearn called his 3,000th consecutive Lakers game in a 92-89 win over the Orlando Magic.

George Mikan scored a career-high 61 points (22-of-45 from the field and 17-of-21 from the free-throw line) to lead the Minneapolis Lakers to a 91-81 double-overtime win over the Rochester Royals. He also added 36 rebounds.

Kobe Bryant surpassed Wilt Chamberlain as the youngest player in NBA history to reach 25,000 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Bryant beat Chamberlain by 35 days at 31 years old and 151 days by recording 31 points.

Kobe Bryant scored 81 points (28-of-46 from the field) in a 122-104 win over the Toronto Raptors. It is the most points scored in a game since Wilt Chamberlain recorded 100 points against the New York Knicks in March 1962.
