This offseason is a big one for the Los Angeles Lakers as they look to get back into championship contention. In order to do that, they not only need to improve their roster, but other aspects of the organization as well.

At the start of the offseason, Rob Pelinka made it clear that the Lakers would be hiring two assistant general managers. The first one has already happened as they are bringing in former New Orleans Pelicans executive Rohan Ramadas. Philadelphia 76ers executive Prosper Karangwa was someone they had interest in for the other gig, but NBA insider Marc Stein is reporting that he is expected to stay put:

There is a growing anticipation that Prosper Karangwa will elect to stay with the 76ers after the hiring of Mike Gansey as the team’s new president of basketball operations. Karangwa is the Sixers’ vice president of player personnel and has drawn interest in recent weeks from the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas.

The interest in Karangwa didn’t come as much as a surprise as the Lakers recently received permission to interview him for the role.

The 48-year-old played at Siena University for four years from 1999-2003 and then professionally overseas until 2010. He then began scouting and started his own scouting service to help European teams scout in the United States. Karangwa was hired as a scout with the Orlando Magic in 2012 and then promoted to director of scouting in 2016.

In 2020, the 76ers hired Karangwa as their vice president of player personnel, where he has helped build out their NBA and G League rosters.

Considering the Lakers hired Ramadas to be their assistant general manager of strategy and data systems, Karangwa would have helped on the player personnel and draft evaluation side of things.

Under new owner Mark Walter, the Lakers are clearly using every resource available to them to improve the organization. Once they finalize their second assistant general manager hiring, L.A. should be ready to attack the offseason to make the necessary improvements to get back into contention.

Rob Pelinka comments on Lakers’ hiring of Rohan Ramadas

After the Lakers announced their hiring of Ramadas, Pelinka released a statement on what he will bring to the organization.

“Rohan is an important and strong addition to our front office as we further build out our basketball operations resources,” Pelinka said. “His unique blend of career experiences and analytical expertise will further strengthen the strong work already taking place internally within our data analytics and salary cap management teams.”

Ramadas used to be a rocket scientist and by all accounts is an extremely smart individual and a rising star in this business.
