Los Angeles Lakers rookie Cameron Carr has a lot of potential that the franchise is hoping to develop. One thing that has stood out about Carr so far is his attitude and work ethic as he has spoken regularly about his desire to improve all facets of his game and willingness to do whatever is needed for the team to be successful.

This is something that really developed during his time at Baylor University. Carr had to sit out after transferring from Tennessee, but, as Baylor coach Scott Drew told Benjamin Royer of the Southern California News Group, that time out allowed him to learn from now-Philadelphia 76ers rising star VJ Edgecombe:

“The smart take from the strong,” Drew said of Carr learning from Edgecombe. “You’re always going to see his work ethic, see how he did things, his approach. And Cam was able to learn from that, and take from that as well.”

Some players might check out when being forced to sit out, but Carr took the opposite approach, being a scout team member for Baylor while being able to face off with one of the best prospects in the country in Edgecombe, who would go on to be selected third overall in the 2025 NBA Draft. Drew believes this experience allowed for Carr’s game to really mature:

“He went from somebody at the beginning of the year that maybe people didn’t know about, to being at the front of the scouting report,” Drew said. “That’s something that he wasn’t on at Tennessee. The adjustment from a great summer and then great start to the year, to all of a sudden things became a lot harder for him from the standpoint – he was the most targeted man defensively.

“(Opposing teams could say), ‘Don’t leave him alone, make sure you know where he is at all times, a lot of help in the gaps,’” Drew continued. “He was able to let his game mature from another standpoint of being the marked man out there.”

This experience, and the mindset that he has built because of it, should pay great dividends for Carr as he continues to grow as a player with the Lakers. He will have an opportunity to earn minutes, but that is far from guaranteed and he could find himself out of the rotation, or even in the G League in order to get some reps.

But Carr proved at Baylor that he will embrace whatever comes and put in all the necessary work and that bodes well for his ability to grow and develop into a player that can make a real impact for the Lakers.

Cameron Carr ranks fourth in vertical leap in NBA 2K27

One of the tools Carr has at his disposal is his elite athleticism as he has an insane vertical leap and the folks in charge of the new NBA 2K27 video game ranked him with the fourth-highest vertical rating.
