The sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner greatly affects everyone within the organization, especially with how quickly everything went down. This was already set to be a new era of Los Angeles Lakers basketball with the front office spending the entire offseason building the team around superstar guard Luka Doncic.
Doncic indeed had already built a good relationship with Mark Walter and had been in contact with the organization throughout the summer. However when it comes to this sale, the Lakers superstar and face of the franchise was not contacted prior to the news breaking, via Dave McMenamin of ESPN:
Doncic was not consulted about the sale, sources told ESPN, but he plans to have a video conference call with Iger and Kushner next week from Slovenia as he prepares to host his teammates for a mini-camp in his home country.
It is good that Doncic will soon be having a call with Iger and Kushner as everyone being on the same page is imperative to team success. And at this point Doncic has become quite used to teams changing ownership as this will now be the fifth owner he’s had since joining the NBA:
“The only constant in life is change,” a source close to Doncic told ESPN. “He’s had five owners now.”
It is insane to think that Doncic has seen that many ownership changes in just eight seasons. Mark Cuban was the owner of the Dallas Mavericks when Doncic was drafted there, but he would sell his majority shares to the Adelson and Dumont families. When Doncic was traded to the Lakers Jeanie Buss and the Buss family were owners before their shares were sold to Walter. And now less than a year after officially taking over as Lakers owner, Walter has sold to Iger and Kushner.
Stability is a need for any franchise to be successful and if the Lakers have plans on getting back into championship contention they will need to embrace that. Doncic is the face of this franchise so ensuring he is on the same wavelength as the new owners should be a top priority.
Luka Doncic comments on Lakers’ ownership sale
It didn’t take long for Doncic to make his thoughts known about the sale of the Lakers as he took to social media to speak about it, noting how he has gotten used to big changes over the past few years and adding that he is looking forward to meeting and working with Iger and Kushner.
