One of the most important things in today’s era of sports is for the most important people within the franchise to all be on one accord and have the same vision. That starts with ownership and goes down to the star player on the team. For the Los Angeles Lakers, that player is Luka Doncic, who is the face of the franchise.
But despite being with the Lakers for less than two years, he is already set to have his third owner of the team.
Doncic was just beginning to build a relationship with previous owner Mark Walter, but now the team has been sold to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, pending league approval. In the immediate aftermath, Doncic said that he was looking forward to working with and getting to know the new Lakers owners and according to NBA insider Marc Stein, he has already reached out:
I’m told Lakers star Luka Doncic this week opened a dialogue with the team’s new lead ownership duo of Bob Iger and Josh Kushner and plans to meet with them at the first opportunity.
This shouldn’t come as any surprise as it is exactly what Doncic said he was going to do. He is fully embracing his role as the face of the Lakers and understands how important it is to be on the same page with the owners of the franchise.
While it was initially a shock when he was traded to the Lakers, Doncic has since made it clear that he loves being a part of this franchise and he plans on leading this team back to the top of the NBA and win championships. He was in contact with Walter and the front office throughout this offseason as they remade the roster around him so ensuring things will continue on this path, at least communication wise, with Iger and Kushner is necessary.
Both of the Lakers’ new owners have experienced great success in their fields and as long as they have that same drive to make the Lakers the absolute best team in the NBA, they should be able to get along just fine with Doncic.
