After the Los Angeles Lakers agreed to terms with Nick Young yesterday, Young met with the media today to discuss his reasons for signing for the veteran’s minimum.

When Dwight Howard decided to leave and the Lakers responded by signing Chris Kaman for the mini mid-level, it appeared the team’s options were quite limited with only the veteran’s minimum available.

After Farmar left more money overseas to return to the Lakers, the Los Angeles native Young also surprised the league by also signing for the veteran’s minimum.

At his introductory press conference, Young discussed how it’s always been a dream for him to return home and play for the Lakers (via Dave McMenamin):

Nick Young: “I grew up in L.A. It’s a dream come true”

Like many kids growing up in Los Angeles, Young also idolized Kobe Bryant:

Nick Young: “Growing up in L.A., Kobe was an idol for me”

It’s refreshing to hear that a player, who signed for much less than he could’ve gotten elsewhere, discuss his ultimate dreams to play for his hometown. While he is only signed for one year, the Lakers hope he will be able to play small forward this season and look to re-sign him after the season.

Young averaged 10.6 points off the bench this past season for the Philadelphia 76ers and should thrive in Mike D’Antoni’s perimeter-oriented offense.
