Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson is arguably more successful in his post-playing career than he was during his days in the NBA. Following basketball, Johnson became one of the best athletes-turned-investors as he’s built an empire through various ventures and ownership stakes.
For example, Johnson recently got to celebrate winning his 18th championship ring thanks to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He also could be in the mix to own another team as the NBA looks to expand into the Las Vegas and Seattle markets.
“Magic Johnson, of course one of our greatest players ever and also has had incredible success off the floor,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said. “I have a strong personal relationship with him and he’s beloved around the league. I know interest from Magic will be welcomed by the league office.
“As I said, in some cases, people who will be leading groups and there’s others who have indicated they want to be parts of ownership groups, so that’s what we’ll now see as the process unfolds.”
There is a lot of interest in NBA expansion right now considering the two markets being discussed as real possibilities are Las Vegas and Seattle. Las Vegas, in particular, is incredibly popular and will continue to grow its sports footprint as they’re set to become the new home of MLB’s Athletics soon.
Johnson would be a major addition to any ownership group as he’s already got the relationships and reputation in league circles. Johnson is a prove winner wherever he goes, and it won’t be surprising to see him throw his hat in the ring once the bidding process is officially underway.
Johnson is just one prominent name that could be involved in future NBA ownership, though the list is expected to grow as things move forward. The game of basketball is as popular as ever and it’s exciting time to for the league and its fans.
One person who seemingly won’t be involved, however, is LeBron James as he revealed he is no longer pursuing a team in Las Vegas.
Magic Johnson not involved day-to-day with Lakers
Since Mark Walter officially became the controlling governor of the Lakers organization, he has started to integrate more personnel from the Los Angeles Dodgers. For example, Lon Rosen, the Dodgers’ former executive vice president and chief of marketing, will now serve as the Lakers’ new president of business operations.
Rosen has a close relationship with Johnson but confirmed that the Lakers legend won’t have any involvement in the day-to-day work.
