Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic is off to a terrific start to the season as through two games, he is averaged 46 points, 11.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists while shooting 62% from the field.
Doncic’s latest outing was arguably his best in a Lakers uniform as he led them to a revenge victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, leading all scorers with 49 points to go along with 11 rebounds and eight assists on 14-of-23 shooting.
After completely transforming his body this past offseason, Doncic looks to be in the best shape of his life and the results have followed.
With how Doncic is playing, his teammate Austin Reaves would not count out the Slovenian star averaging 40 this season, via Dave McMenamin of ESPN:
“Yes,” Reaves told ESPN.
Could Doncic average 40, and would it help the team win?
“Yes,” Reaves continued. “He’s so good, it’s weird.”
Reaves didn’t want to give too much credit to Doncic though, so he made fun of his dunk attempt late in the game before heaping more praise on his co-star.
“You’ve seen the dunk; it wasn’t very explosive,” Reaves joked. “I would claim it as a dunk, but I’m not very athletic. He’s obviously one of the best players in the league. He’s been that since he got into the league. So, the stuff that he does isn’t a surprise to anybody. It’s crazy because you look at the numbers he’s putting up, but he does it in a way where everybody’s involved. He’s such a good passer and that’s enough compliments for him.”
While a lot of the attention has rightfully been on Doncic through two games, Reaves has been not too shabby in his own right, averaging 25.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 10.0 assists on 58.1% shooting.
If the Lakers are getting that type of production from their backcourt then it should lead to a lot of success. Obviously those exact numbers aren’t necessarily sustainable, especially once LeBron James returns, but Doncic and Reaves both are playing the best basketballs of their career to begin the 2025-26 season.
Luka Doncic makes history in Lakers’ first two games
Luka Doncic entered the record books in the Lakers’ first two games as he became the first player in franchise history and just the fourth in NBA history to score at least 40 in each. He joined Anthony Davis, Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain as the only players to do so and Doncic’s 92 total points are the third-most ever through two games to begin a season.
