The bromance between Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves has been one of the most endearing stories of the Los Angeles Lakers’ season. While they regularly talk trash and say they can’t stand each other, it is clear the two are close and if anyone has been questioning it, Reaves’ recent actions should end all of that discussion.
Doncic suffered a hamstring injury during the third quarter of the Lakers’ loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder and while he was on the ground, a Thunder fan directed a comment about his defense towards the superstar. That prompted Reaves to immediately come to Doncic’s defense, engaging in a profanity-laced verbal spat with the fan, via Hoop Central:
Fan to Luka: “Now you know what it’s like to play defense.”
Austin Reaves: “Shut the fu*k up. Shut up, he’s fu*king hurt.”
Fan: “Fu*k you.”
Austin Reaves: “Fu*k you.”

Normally a fan talking trash to a player about something like defense would be fair game, but to do so while the player is on the ground after clearly suffering is just unacceptable. Obviously fans want their team to win, but antagonizing an opponent while they’re laying on the court in pain is well beyond the line.
Reaves having Doncic’s back in this instance is warranted. Of course the frustration of the Lakers being dominated by the Thunder likely added to Reaves attitude at that moment, but as he said, the fan should have some respect for a player being injured and not talk trash at that time.
This incident also gave a glimpse into Reaves’ character. While he may look like someone who will back away from confrontation, Reaves is a serious competitor who has no problem getting in the face of his opponents, or calling out fans who he feels has stepped over the line.
This Lakers team is a close group and the relationships and camaraderie they’ve built has been obvious. Reaves and Doncic are brothers and while they may insult each other, they aren’t gonna let anyone else do so.
Austin Reaves discusses back injury
Reaves himself also dealt with an injury as he labored through some back trouble during the first half on Thursday night. He briefly checked out of the game but was able to play through it and doesn’t believe the issue is serious or will hinder him moving forward.
