D-Fenders News: Malcolm Thomas Impresses in Season Opener

Austin Toros vs. Los Angeles D-Fenders - NBA Development League Finals - Game 2

Considered one of the best talents in the D-League, Malcolm Thomas certainly didn’t disappoint in the season opener against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The D-Fenders forward finished the game with 36 points, 18 rebounds, 3 blocks, 4 steals, and 3 assists.

Despite the great individual performance, Thomas was solely focused on the team and was disappointed about the season opening loss via the Los Angeles D-Fenders:

“We didn’t get the win — that’s all that matters. You always want to get the first one to get off to a good start. We have a lot of stuff to improve on and I’m pretty sure we’ll get better.”

During training camp, Thomas shared that he wanted to show scouts that he’s more than just a rebounder and defender this season. While his focus will always be on the defensive end, he worked extremely hard during the off-season to improve his offensive skills.

Despite getting double-teamed in the post, Thomas showed an array of post moves and was effective passing the ball to open teammates. The biggest improvement in his game came on the perimeter as he made two three-pointers on four attempts and looked extremely comfortable in his shot.

Since the start of training camp, Thomas has earned praise from head coach Bob MacKinnon and his teammates. With an improved perimeter game to go along with his defensive abilities, Thomas will look to continue these strong performances in hopes of getting a call-up from the NBA.
