Dirk Nowitzki Does Not See a Threat in the Western Conference

Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki told ESPN Dallas that he does not see a team in the Western Conference that can knock the Mavs off the throne. The Mavericks are obviously the reigning NBA champions, and according to their leader, no one is the West is good enough to beat them.

“I haven’t seen one team in the West that I’m scared of,” Nowitzki said. “I really haven’t. I think we can compete with all of them.

“Oklahoma City has probably the best record, but I think we’ve played them well every time we’ve seen them and everybody else has been up and down.”

The Mavericks, however, are currently the eighth seed in the Western Conference and stand at 11-8. The Lakers share the same record as the Mavericks, but the Oklahoma City Thunder are atop the conference at 15-3.Compared to the Lakers, who are 9-4 against conference teams, the Mavericks are at a mediocre 7-7 when playing Western teams.

Nowitzki himself has been playing at a sub-par level and decided to sit out four games because he is not in basketball shape. The Finals MVP said he did not train during the summer and was ‘tired of basketball.’ When your leader is not motivated to play and repeat, it is very hard to win a championship.
