When the Los Angeles Lakers were sold to current Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter, the two historic franchises came under the same umbrella of TWG Global. The Dodgers have had great success under Walter and the hope is that the Lakers will be built back up to do the same.
Obviously, the rules in basketball and baseball are completely different, but the two franchises are able to share certain resources and the staffs can help each other out with different ideas. And some of that is already taking place.
It was recently reported that Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman and special advisor Farhan Zaidi are both serving as advisors to Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka.
Friedman was asked about it on the “Dodgers Territory” podcast and he clarified what exactly he and Zaidi are doing to help the Lakers, keeping in mind that they are still running the Dodgers:
“Farhan is spending a lot of time helping Mark in all of his different interests, I’ve got a pretty full-time gig here. That being said, we’re all kind of under this TWG umbrella and it’s about providing resources to one another and whatever benefits we can get, kind of collaborating, that’s kind of how we see it. Anything that’s kind of under Mark’s umbrella, it’s kind of on all of us to be able to work together and achieve the best outcomes for TWG. Still a full-time job here, definitely not taking my eye off the ball, but just having really good conversations with Rob Pelinka. Farhan has jumped in there some and Rob came out to our Dodger organization town hall and did a Q&A with [Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes] and myself. Just all kind of leaning in together to work together and try to figure out the best ways to bring as many championships to Los Angeles as we can.”
Friedman certainly has his hands full with everything he does for the Dodgers, but he has still been able to have some conversations with Pelinka as the ultimate goal is to win championships under Walter. The Lakers are one of the premier franchises in sports and titles are what this team is predicated on.
Both of these staffs working together and figuring out the best ways to succeed bodes well for the Lakers as they move forward under this new ownership.
Lakers a ‘team of interest’ in potential Giannis Antetokounmpo trade
One major move Pelinka and the Lakers front office could be exploring is a potential trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo and they are reportedly a team of interest in a deal for the Bucks superstar should this saga stretch into the offseason when they will have more assets to trade.
