How to Realistically Solve the Lakers’ Point Guard Issue

Despite Fisher’s ability to make the big shot when it counts, his performance this season and last season has been hard for Laker fans to watch. The reality is that he cannot keep up with the younger, more athletic point guards that seem to be taking over the game.

I believe Steve Blake may be put on the trading block in order to fill out a potential trade package. Blake is a suitable back-up and can contribute greatly when he has his confidence, which has been a constant problem during his time thus far with the Lakers. So then we are left with rookie Darius Morris.

During the time that Blake has been out due to a sternum injury, Morris has demonstrated potential. Morris is quick and a decent passer. In the Clippers game last Saturday, when he was guarding Chris Paul, Morris kept up even making it tough for Paul’s offense. He did everything a rookie can do against Paul, which is what Laker fans can only ask for. While talk about him seemed to mess with his approach in the Dallas game on Monday, as he tried to do too much with the ball, the potential of Morris remains.

Morris already has a solid foundation and mentality. He recently stated, “I think [confidence] is what you need to have at the point guard position because all the other four guys are looking at you when you bring the ball up the court so if you look rattled or you look nervous then they’re not going to have total confidence in you or the plays that we’re trying to run. You’ve to be out there and you’ve got to be a leader although you don’t have as much experience as those guys you’ve got to show them that you belong here and I think that kind of just carries over when I check in the game and kind of translates through my game.”**

This is when Fisher needs to step in. Fisher is one of the greatest leaders in professional sports. Fisher has the knowledge, experience, professionalism and willingness to help develop the young Darius Morris. For the next three weeks or so, Morris’ minutes will be greatly increased due to Blake’s injury. The Lakers’ schedule is finally easing up a little and they have a chance to actually have full practices. Now is the time for Fisher to teach Morris his insight and approach to the game to build upon Morris’ foundation. Morris’ natural abilities along with the knowledge and approach of Fisher? Not bad. At least for now.
