While many have focused on the Lakers top pick in the 2014 draft, Julius Randle, it was the team’s other pick, point guard Jordan Clarkson, who led the Lakers’ summer league team in scoring.

A 6’5 combo guard from Missouri, Clarkson could brings a combination of length and explosiveness that the Lakers sorely need. But Clarkson understands that his foremost responsibility will be defense as he told Lakers reporter Mike Trudell:

I know I’m gonna have to come here in and play defense for sure. Coach Scott holds his hat on that so that’s what I’m gonna try to bring it on the first day on the defensive end. Everything else will come along if I do that.

Clarkson very well may turn out to be the Lakers answer to the quick point guards who have tormented them for years. And Clarkson has been working hard on his game this summer to make sure he can contribute:

A little bit of everything. Keeping my shot consistent, working on my handle, being able to play off the ball, stuff like that. Playing off screens, and just being able to make plays and knock down shots. The coaches are doing a great job of coming in the gym and working with me.

Getting Clarkson at the 46th pick could turn out to be the steal of the draft as Clarkson’s talent has definitely caught the eye of some of his teammates.

With the Lakers having some questions at point guard, Clarkson may not have to wait long to show his worth to the Lakers on both ends of the court.
