In the 2014-15 NBA season opener against the Houston Rockets, the Los Angeles Lakers suffered a major loss as rookie Julius Randle broke his leg in his first official NBA game.

Considering the circumstances, it was a devastating injury that could make any player lose confidence. However, Randle says the leg injury has built his level of belief and reassured him of his ability according to Bleacher Report’s Kevin Ding:

So when asked if all this time not playing has chipped away at what has always been a healthy confidence, Randle responded without hesitation: “Absolutely not. If anything, it has built my level of belief. I see the opportunity. It’s reassured me of my ability and the things I know I can do.”

Since being drafted by the Lakers, Randle has had supreme confidence in his ability. While the rookie still has a lot to learn and considers himself an ‘extreme’ student of the game, he is preparing for Kobe Bryant to pass him the torch.

Although there is uncertainty around if the Lakers will keep their top-five protected pick and who will ultimately be available in free agency, Randle is expected to be one of the key pieces for the franchise after Kobe retires. With Randle’s confidence remaining high despite the injury and already preparing for next season, there is excitement for perhaps the future face of the franchise.

In six preseason games, Randle averaged 6.8 points and 4.8 rebounds in 18.9 minutes.
