Kobe Will Begin Full-Weight Bearing Running In ‘A Few Weeks’

Kobe Bryant achilles

Exactly one month ago, Kobe Bryant posted a video of himself running on an anti-gravity treadmill. While he will not participate in preseason games according to the Lakers, Bryant has made significant process.

According to L.A. Daily News’ Mark Medina, Kobe was seen running at 75 percent of his body weight on a treadmill this morning. While Bryant is a few weeks away from full-weight bearing running, athletic trainer, Gary Vitti says there is no projected date for a return:

“He’s doing well and has had no setbacks. There’s no projected date. He’ll be ready when he’s ready. Nobody has a crystal ball on this thing.”

Fortunately for Bryant, he also doesn’t have injuries to the rest of his body that could have been problematic due to the length of his recovery:

“He doesn’t have injuries in the rest of his body.  When a guy has been out for a long time, that neuromuscular system shuts down and the nerves don’t fire the muscles in the right pattern in the right way.”

It’s extremely encouraging to hear that Bryant is only a few weeks away from full-weight bearing running. While some may think this signals his return on opening night against the Clippers, there is a lot more work to be done. Bryant will need to rebuild strength in his legs, knees, back and core to avoid any setbacks upon his return.

During an exclusive interview with Gulf News, Bryant refused to discuss his place among the all-time greats and is solely focused on winning his sixth championship this season.
